Job Description
MSD of Shakamak is seeking a student-centered, collaborative, and engaging Junior High English Teacher to support student growth in reading, writing, and communication skills. This position emphasizes the use of evidence-based literacy practices grounded in the Science of Reading to strengthen students' foundational and advanced literacy skills. The ideal candidate will build strong relationships with students, maintain high expectations, and contribute to a positive and supportive school culture. Essential Responsibilities Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned English/Language Arts instruction Implement evidence-based literacy practices aligned to the Science of Reading, including explicit instruction in vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, and written communication skills Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and abilities, including students with gaps in foundational literacy skills Use formative and summative assessments data, including literacy diagnostics, to guide instruction and monitor progress Create a structured, positive classroom environment that supports student learning Establish clear expectations for student behavior and promote accountability and respect Collaborate with grade-level teams, instructional staff, and interventionists to support student literacy growth Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues Support students' social, emotional, and academic development Maintain accurate records, including grades, attendance, and required documentation Participate in professional development and school improvement initiatives, particularly related to literacy instruction Ensure compliance with all district, state, and federal requirements Qualifications Valid Indiana teaching license in English/Language Arts or appropriate content area (or ability to obtain) Knowledge of Indiana Academic Standards for English/Language Arts Understanding of the Science of Reading and its application in adolescent literacy Ability to support both foundational and advanced literacy development Strong classroom management and organizational skills Commitment to collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching junior high or middle school students Training or experience in Science of Reading-aligned practices Familiarity with ILEARN and literacy assessment tools Experience supporting struggling readers at the secondary level Application Process Interested applicants should submit: Letter of interest Resume Copy of teaching license References
