Department Biology Job Summary Bowdoin College has a full-time, academic year, benefits-eligible Laboratory Instructor position available beginning the fall semester of 2026. The Biology Department is looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to work closely with supervising faculty to teach laboratory sections in courses that will include Biological Principles and Scientific Reasoning in Biology. Responsibilities may include experimental design, laboratory preparation (the generation of laboratory handouts, preparing experimental solutions, maintaining equipment/instrumentation, and providing for the collection and disposal of all laboratory waste), presenting pre-lab lectures, instructing laboratory sections, overseeing exploratory student-led research projects, supervising student assistants, providing guidance about data analysis and scientific writing, and grading pre-lab assignments and laboratory reports. Successful applicants will join a supportive Biology department comprised of 16 permanent faculty members and 10 laboratory instructors, an instrumentation specialist, and an academic coordinator. And more: bowdoin/hr/benefits-perks/index Education/Skills Requirements Applicants must possess a BS in a natural science field with an emphasis in an area of Biology (MS is strongly preferred) Excellent oral and written communications skills Strong organizational skills and problem-solving abilities An ability to provide individual and group instruction with sensitivity to different learning modalities. Candidates should ideally be familiar with a broad range of biological topics, experimental design, and the use of computers in data acquisition and analysis. The successful applicant will be able to integrate into a cohort of lab Instructors in Biology and Neuroscience. Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents 1-3 years of experience required teaching labs using laboratory equipment and techniques Experience in teaching both field-based and lab-based laboratories is preferred. Experience with laboratory techniques used in introductory biology Pedagogical experience providing individual and group instruction with sensitivity to different learner preferences Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications in this posting to be considered for hire. Standard Work Days and Hours Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5:30pm Some weekends or evening hours may be required. This is an exempt position requiring the time commitment necessary to successfully complete job requirements.
