DESCRIPTION
Performs all aspects of humane animal care duties to ensure animal safety and well-being and provides quality customer service by providing the public with assistance and accurate information regarding Animal Services' policies, programs, and procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or coursework in animal science, veterinary technology, or related field preferred. Previous experience working with animals in a shelter, veterinary clinic, or animal care facility preferred. Must possess a valid Driver's License Class C at time of placement. Must complete and pass Basic Certification Course required by Texas Department of Health and Euthanasia Certification within the first 6 months of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of animal behavior, handling techniques, and basic animal care principles, with a commitment to providing compassionate and humane treatment to animals. Skills in excellent interpersonal communication, with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with diverse individuals, including staff, volunteers, animal owners, and the general public. Skills in basic computer usage and ability to learn shelter management software. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment, including lifting and carrying animals, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
MAJOR DUTIES
Cleans, disinfects, and maintains shelter area as assigned. Feeds, water, bathes, dips, and exercises animals. Provides humane sheltering services in compliance with State Minimum standards and shelter policies. Safely and humanely handle animals of unknown health and temperament. Assists in monitoring the medical/behavioral status of animals and performs related health care activities. Must be able to perform euthanasia as a function of shelter operations. Ensures the safety of animals and people in the shelter. Accurately maintains all required records in the shelter's database. Provides information to the public. Transfers animals between kennels and cages using proper handling procedures. Interface with the public and respond to citizen inquiries and concerns. May supervise the work assigned to community service workers. Other duties as assigned. This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.
