BROWN COUNTY HUMANE SOCIETY SHELTER MANAGER

$1,500-$1,800 biweekly ($39,000-$46,800 annually). Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Shelter Manager is responsible for the overall management and daily operation of Brown County Humane Society. This position ensures the highest standards of animal welfare, oversees shelter operations, supervises staff and volunteers, coordinates adoptions, volunteer engagement, community awareness initiatives, and community partnerships, and serves as the primary liaison between BCHS and the public, veterinarians, rescue organizations, municipalities, and law enforcement agencies. The Shelter Manager plays a critical role in advancing the mission of BCHS through compassionate animal care, operational excellence, public engagement, and responsible stewardship of organizational resources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Animal Welfare and Shelter Operations Ensure the humane care, treatment, and welfare of all animals housed at BCHS. Monitor animal health, behavior, and well-being daily. Coordinate veterinary appointments, vaccinations, spay/neuter services, health certificates, and medical treatment. Oversee animal intake, owner surrender, transfer, adoption, foster, and return-to-owner processes. Ensure all animals have continuous access to fresh water, appropriate nutrition, and clean housing. Ensure kennels, water buckets, food dishes, litter boxes, and animal housing areas are cleaned and sanitized daily. Develop and maintain standards of care, cleaning procedures, and animal handling protocols. Coordinate emergency animal care needs and welfare concerns. Staff and Volunteer Leadership Supervise kennel technicians and shelter staff. Recruit, train, schedule, coach, and evaluate employees and volunteers. Promote a positive, professional, and mission-focused culture. Ensure staff and volunteers understand and follow BCHS policies and procedures. Assist with workforce planning and staffing coverage. Community Relations and Public Engagement Respond to inquiries received through phone, email, social media, and other communication channels. Provide information regarding adoptions, owner surrenders, lost and found animals, behavior concerns, and available resources. Assist adopters in selecting appropriate pets and completing adoption processes. Represent BCHS professionally within the community. Build positive relationships with donors, volunteers, rescue partners, municipalities, veterinarians, and community organizations. Coordinate and participate in adoption events, volunteer recruitment efforts, community education initiatives, and fundraising activities. Animal Transfer and Rescue Coordination Develop and maintain partnerships with rescue organizations and transfer programs. Coordinate transportation, veterinary documentation, and transfer logistics. Facilitate placement opportunities that improve animal outcomes and shelter capacity. Municipal and Law Enforcement Collaboration Work collaboratively with local municipalities, animal control partners, and law enforcement agencies. Assist with neglect, abuse, abandonment, and animal welfare investigations as appropriate. Respond to municipal animal-related concerns and shelter service requests. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain accurate animal records, adoption records, medical records, and shelter documentation. Prepare reports and updates for the Board of Directors. Monitor inventory levels and order supplies as needed. Assist with budget management and operational planning. Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and organizational policies. Facility Oversight Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming shelter environment. Identify maintenance and safety concerns and coordinate corrective action. Oversee facility upkeep and equipment management.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience in animal welfare, veterinary medicine, shelter operations, nonprofit management, public service, or related fields preferred. Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred. Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and clean for extended periods. Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments.
WORK SCHEDULE
Full-time salaried position. Typical schedule is approximately 40 hours per week. Some evenings, weekends, and holidays may be required. Participation in an on-call rotation or emergency response may be required.
