An Animal Control Officer works for a police department or public safety agency and responds to calls for help with abandoned or mistreated animals. Assists with capturing wild animals found in city neighborhoods or populated areas.
This position is responsible for assisting with the overall care of all animals within the shelter. The responsibilities will vary based on the current needs of the shelter. This position will work under the supervision of the Animal Services Supervisor in a part-time capacity. Work involves ensuring the animal shelter is maintained in a clean and safe condition. Feeding, handling, and providing custodial care to animals in the shelter. Assisting the public in claiming and adopting animals. Performs other related duties as assigned. Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Knowledge of the tools and techniques involved in animal control activities. Knowledge of animal characteristics and behavior. Knowledge of City animal control ordinances. Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions. Skill in preparing clear and accurate reports. Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships. Skill in setting priorities for competing projects. Skill in performing mathematical calculations. Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment. Skill in interpersonal relations. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
: The Animal Control Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
: Guidelines include North Carolina General Statutes; department rules and regulations; City policies and procedures; local, state, and federal animal control laws; and guidelines regarding the euthanizing of animals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY
: The work consists of related animal control ordinance enforcement duties. Inclement weather conditions, dangerous animals, and dissatisfied citizens contribute to the complexity of the position.
