CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

The City Manager is seeking an experienced Code Enforcement Officer. The person will have strong administra ve skills, be trustworthy, highly responsible and commi ed to customer service. The Na ve American transla on for Canandaigua is the Chosen Spot and this designa on holds true today. Located on the northern shores of Canandaigua Lake in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York, the City of Canandaigua (pop. 10,500, 4.83 sq miles) is known for its scenic and historic charm with a vibrant downtown featuring a variety of locally-owned shops, galleries, restaurants and breweries. Not only is Canandaigua Lake beau ful, but it also provides rich recrea onal opportuni es such as swimming, fishing and boa ng. The City's Code Enforcement Office administers and enforces the New York State Uniform Fire Preven on and Building Code, ensures compliance with local Zoning Ordinances and other appropriate laws, codes, rules and regula ons pertaining to new or exis ng buildings and structures. This may include seeking Court enforcement of orders.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Code Enforcement Officers report directly to the Director of Planning and Development and are responsible for the administra on and enforcement of local laws, codes, and ordinances adopted by the City Council and applicable State and Federal regula ons, including the New York State Uniform Fire Preven on and Building Code.

Responsibili es include:

Maintaining records concerning code enforcement ac vi es, including applica ons received, permits and cer ficates issued, fees charged and collected inspec on reports, etc.; Preparing a variety of reports relevant to Code Enforcement ac vi es for the municipal government; Inspec ng buildings and structures in the process of construc on or repair for compliance with approved plans and specifica ons and recommends all requirements of applicable codes, ordinances and laws, and recommends cer fica on of same; Providing advice on the State Uniform Fire Preven on and Building Code, municipal building and/or zoning rules and regula ons and other relevant State laws and rules to various boards and commi ees as well as the general public; Reviewing building permit applica ons, including building plans, to determine compliance with the New York State Uniform Fire Preven on, Building code, Energy Code, as well as local laws and zoning ordinances Inspects exis ng buildings and structures to ensure conformity with codes; Inves gates complaints and a empts to resolve problems through consulta on and enforcement, if necessary; Issues, denies or revokes building permits and cer ficates of occupancy as required; Ordering code viola ons in exis ng structures to be removed and arranges for condemna on no ces to owners and builders for improper or hazardous condi ons pursuant to State or local laws; Issuing wri en no ces to correct unsafe, illegal and dangerous condi ons in exis ng structures; May file complaints when appropriate, seeking Court enforcement of various codes; Monitoring the ac vi es of electrical inspectors;
