Responsible for overseeing the daily activities of the Animal Services Officers on staff. Serves as a leader, advisor and mentor to the Animal Services Officers with a positive attitude and guidance for corrective action as needed. Also responsible for ensuring the department's compliance with local and state laws. Supervision is provided by the Animal Services Manager. Responsible for the supervision of Animal Services Officers and others as needed. Organizes and plans officer actions to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of labor. Conducts meetings with staff to reinforce procedures, set expectations and review workload. Assists the department manager with staff interviews, hiring recommendations and training. Patrols streets and responds to calls to pick up stray and dead animals. Cleans and maintains animal shelter daily in accordance to state laws. Issues citations for violations of Animal Control laws. Appears in municipal court to testify regarding violations. Keeps all records regarding the department up to date and in accordance with all state requirements. Provides educational support and printed material to citizens regarding health maintenance, licensing and fee requirements. Understands the health necessity of euthanizing animals and is agreeable to perform this function. Must be able to pursue stray animals unaided. Performs all tasks within safety guidelines, using approved safety methods. Investigates nuisance complaints from citizens. Maintains all Animal Services equipment in constant good working order. Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City. Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all. Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others. Other duties as may be assigned. High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver's License. Must have Texas Driver's License within 60 days of hire. Driving record from DPS required. The Texas Department of State Health Services Animal Services Officer Basic Training Certification. Ability to obtain within one year of hire, the Advanced Animal Services Officer Training Certification. Ability to obtain within two years of hire, the Texas Department of State Health Services Certified Euthanasia Technician. Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management.PHYSICAL STRENGTH REQUIRED
