Performs duties to protect residents from stray, vicious, and/or diseased animals; captures and impounds animals; maintains records; and prepares and submits reports. Enforces laws, regulations, and county ordinances. Organizational Relationships 1.

This is a non-supervisory position. 3.

Has contact with other county employees, animal shelters, local veterinarians, area law enforcement officers, and the general public. For the purpose of compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), this job description does not take into account potential reasonable accommodations.
Essential Duties:
  • Patrols for stray, vicious, and/or injured animals and responds to citizen complaints regarding the same;
  • Responds to emergency calls, such as cruelty to animal complaints, animal bites, and control of poisonous or dangerous animals;
  • Removes, impounds, manages, and cares for stray and unwanted animals;
  • Investigates bite reports and other complaints; determines if animal or owner of animal is in violation of county ordinances and/or state law; issues citations as appropriate;
  • Files complaints with the Justice of the Peace office, County and/or District Attorney's Offices; and appears in court, when necessary;
  • Removes deceased animals from impound; disposes properly;
  • Traps wild and domesticated animals;
  • Maintains records and prepares required reports with the county and state;
  • Prepares animals for proper rabies testing and transports animals safely to the lab;
  • Maintains all equipment: traps, catch pole, tranquilizer guns, lock boxes, taser, etc., and
  • Maintains, cleans, and feeds animals.
Other Important Duties:
  • Attends required continuing education as required by law and/or Environmental Health Director; and
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of:
animal behavior; health regulations; county ordinances and state laws; equipment operations; and records preparation. Skill/Ability to: safely and properly handle and care for animals; establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and the public; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; and maintain necessary certifications, Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, and good driving record. Physical Requirements and Work Environment Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions of the job. Ability to lift in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Frequent reaching with arms, bending, twisting, standing, walking, stooping, and climbing stairs; and Constant sitting and/or use of the computer and office equipment. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, repetitive motion, speaking, talking, and/or visual acuity.
