CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

JOB SUMMARY
Under direction of a Code Enforcement Supervisor, Manager, and/or the Community Services Administrator, conduct inspections of residential and commercial properties in the city to determine if violations of city codes exist with specific reference to property maintenance, zoning, and other ordinances. Regularly work early morning, evening, and weekend hours. Perform other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Visually and physically inspect residential and commercial properties, as assigned by supervisor, for compliance with city codes and zoning ordinances. Interpret and enforce property maintenance codes and regulations. Work effectively with the public to ensure compliance when violations are found. Issue court citations for violations when required and attend court cases where violations have been filed. Assign work to, and effectively coordinate with, city contractors. Coordinate duties with other city departments involved in code enforcement. Maintain accurate records of complaints and inspections made. Prepare effective reports and other written communication. Operate personal computer for word processing. Communicate courteously and effectively with the public, officials, and other city employees, in person, in writing, and by telephone, even in stressful situations.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Answers telephone. Operate various office machines, including copy machines, printers, and scanners. Regular evening and weekend work will be required. Must have a reliable vehicle for inspections.
PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES AND WORKING CONDITIONS
May be required to lift, push, pull or carry up to 30 pounds within scope of job responsibilities. Will work in office and field environment with constant travel from site to site. May work with some exposure to noise, dust, and inclement weather conditions.
REQUIRED DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES
Bachelor's degree required. Must also have State of Texas Code Enforcement Officer certificate or obtain this within one year of appointment. Valid Texas driver's license, Class C, required.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS
Basic computer keyboard skills required.
Must have knowledge of:
pertinent codes and ordinances administered by Community Services; legal procedures involving enforcement of codes and ordinances; inspection techniques. Must be able to read, write, and communicate courteously and effectively with others in English, in person, in writing, and by telephone, even in stressful situations. Ability to speak Spanish strongly preferred. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Must have ability to deal effectively with code enforcement problems. Must be able to prepare effective letters and reports.
Number of available positions:
