Job Description

Humane Officer Reports to:
County Commission Job Summary:
The Humane Officer enforces State and County laws pertaining to animal protection and control and responds to calls related to violations of animal control ordinances in the Randolph County area. The Humane Officer is expected to respond to animal abuse, neglect, and animal hoarding. This work involves a great deal working outdoors, working with the public and driving. It also can require the lifting of heavy animals. This job can pose great danger to the Humane Officer. Work encountered is routine to complex in nature; and depends entirely on the Humane Officer's initiative and ingenuity.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assists officers with removal of animals.
  • Writes citations.
  • Finds homes for animals.
  • Testifies in court as to what was found.
  • Cleans and decontaminates dog boxes and the back of the truck.
  • Documents and photographs abuse and neglect.
  • Catches and restrains vicious animals.
  • Responds to complaints of abused or neglected animals.
  • Obtains witness statements.
  • Checks each animal, assess injuries and physical condition, and document.
  • Contacts a veterinarian to either respond with or be prepared for arrival of animals.
  • Takes animals to the Humane Society.
  • Reviews and chronicles all evidence to present to the prosecutor.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of State, Randolph County and municipal laws and orders.
  • Knowledge of police procedures.
  • Knowledge of animal taxation.
  • Ability to fill out paperwork pertaining to job.
  • Ability to drive a truck.
  • Skill and ability to speak to the public, and give presentations.
  • Skill and ability to read to understand laws.
Other Characteristics:
  • Operates animal control equipment.
  • Operates office equipment such as a computer, and printer.
  • Sets and maintains traps.
  • Explains proper care of animals.
  • Keeps equipment clean and serviced.
  • Administers minor first aid.
  • Rescues injured or trapped animals.
  • Finds home for animals.
Work Environment:
  • Works non-standard hours in regular shift. Is on call 24/7, including holidays, weekends. Can work more than 35 hours per week.
  • Most of work time involves responding and handling calls with the remaining spent in office conditions.
Physical Demands:
  • Regularly works outdoors, driving a vehicle, walking on uneven ground, running, and lifting and or carrying 100 pounds.
Qualifications:
    Education & Experience:
    A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
      Certifications & Credentials:
      Must complete Training with the National Animal Control Association within 30 days of hire and a valid driver's license.
