Job Description

MARQUETTE COUNTY
To apply please complete the application available on our website: www.co.marquette.mi.us General Summary Under the supervision of the Chief Circuit Court Judge or designee, maintains courtroom security, directs parties to proper area, and provides general assistance to the judge. Provides assistance to court participants on scheduling and procedural information. Escorts and provides for the security of prisoners while in the courthouse. Essential Functions 1. Opens the courtroom and ensures its readiness for court proceedings, directs parties to the proper area, and provides schedule and procedural information to attorneys, jurors, and others. 2. Monitors areas related to court operations, including courtrooms, hallways, waiting areas, entrances, and other public access spaces to identify and respond to security concerns, safety risks, or disruptive behavior. Reports concerns to appropriate personnel and takes reasonable action consistent with assigned authority. 3. Notifies jail of prisoners to be brought to court and ensures appropriate security measures while in the courthouse. 4. Obtains files needed for court schedule from County Clerk's Office. 5. Works with the jury officer to escort jurors to and from the courtroom, provides for their needs, and sequesters them as necessary. 6. Maintains the law library, obtaining price quotes on electronic and other materials, processing orders and bills, and shelving materials. Provides assistance to attorneys and citizens related to the use of law library resources. 7. Attends hearings and other proceedings in Circuit Court and Probate Court, as needed, to provide security oversight, maintain courtroom order, assist court participants, and provide general operational support to the judge and court staff. Calls cases into court and opens court by announcing entrance of the judge. 8. Conducts follow up investigation on prospective jurors who do not respond to a summons. 9. Locates attorneys needed for court proceedings. 10. Responds to inquiries of callers and visitors regarding scheduling and procedural matters. Retrieves information from files on computer system as necessary. 11. Reviews dockets daily to identify individuals appearing before the court who may require additional security precautions and to determine whether outstanding warrants or other relevant matters exist. 12. Provides general assistance to judge by retrieving files, distributing mail, locating law books, making copies, delivering documents and related tasks. 13. Assists in operating court recording and video conferencing systems under the direction of the judicial assistant or judge. 14. Other duties as assigned. Other Functions 15. Assists uniformed deputies in courtroom security screening and court security. 16. May perform special projects, such as researching and compiling statistics, researching new products and services, and providing administrative support. This list may not be inclusive of the total scope of job functions to be performed. Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted, or modified at any time.
Employment Qualifications Education:
High school graduation or its equivalent. Prefer some college level coursework in court administration, criminal justice, or related areas.
Experience:
Two years' experience in courtroom or some law enforcement or security capacity. Prefer some experience in an administrative support capacity.
Other Requirements:
Must be able to be deputized and carry a weapon.
