The Deputy Bailiff performs responsible law enforcement work in the security of courtrooms. An employee in this class provides security for the courtroom including security for court officials, opening of court, physical inspections and security, inmate custody, and security for the public. Work involves broad contacts with the public and court officials as well as considerable judgement and initiative and tact, courtesy, and firmness in dealing with inmates, courtroom officials, and the general public. Work is performed under regular supervision and evaluated for adherence to regulations, laws, time schedules, and the safety and security of inmates and the general public. Essential Job Functions Provides security for court officials and the public; conducts inspections of courtrooms and related facilities; operates metal detectors; escorts judges and other court officials to court, on trips, to vehicles and other places as needed; provides security for magistrates, Clerk of Court staff, and others as needed. Opens, recesses and closes court at designated times; makes announcements on court rules; enforces court rules; calls out those absent as directed by the court; inspects the courtroom for safety and security; insures that rooms are set up properly for use of judges and other staff; maintains security and decorum in the courtroom; maintains security for jury during trial, sequestrations and deliberations; provides communications to jurors with courtroom officials; insures juror needs are met. Performs crowd control; instructs the public attending court on areas for waiting and standing during recess and at other times; sets up and shows video to prospective jurors of their responsibilities; reserves courtroom seats for inmates, court appointed attorneys and others; lines up cases and related persons for efficient courtroom procedures. Secures and transports inmates to and from court as needed; reviews inmate population list for potential inmate problems, conflicts or contacts; communicates with other staff on inmate transport, courtroom assignments, and holding times; transports inmates to other locations as needed. Makes records of court dispositions regarding inmates; maintains records of work activities. Approaches judges for direction when subjects show contempt; takes people into custody upon conviction; serves orders of arrest. Uses assigned firearm, pepper spray, Taser, handcuffs, leg irons, and radio. Perform other law enforcement duties as required Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education and Experience:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and related experience in law enforcement, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses or Certifications:

Possession of a valid driver's license. Possession of certification to use a firearm and to use pepper spray and/or similar chemicals. Possession of Basic Law Enforcement Training certification issued by the Sheriff Training and Standards Commission is preferred.

Special Requirements:

Bilingual preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards related to transportation of inmates and courtroom procedures. Knowledge of detention policies and procedures covering inmate security, classification, care and discipline. Knowledge of the policies, procedures, organization, and function of the Sheriff's Department. Knowledge of the application of information technology to the work. Skill in collaborative conflict resolution. Ability to exercise sound judgement in routine and emergency situations requiring security decisions. Ability to provide direction and tact in dealing with the public in a firm way. Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written forms. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with and deal tactfully, firmly, and decisively with staff, prisoners, attorneys, court personnel, and the general public. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium work which exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Tasks may require the following abilities: climbing, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuityto perform extensive reading, and to distinguish details of persons and things in law enforcement work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee is subject to hazards in law enforcement work including working inside a detention center environment, and exposure to various hazards such as dangerous persons and loud noises. Work in law enforcement is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens.
