Job Description

The Jefferson County Humane Society is hiring a part-time Humane Agent The role of the Humane Agent is to uphold and enforce animal cruelty laws according to the Ohio Revised Code, and when necessary, submit evidence to prosecute those who violate these laws. The agent responds to emergency situations and frequently works with other law enforcement agencies. Agents provide education and insight to animal owners with the intention of improving their care. They also keep records, maintain data, write reports, and must be organized and proficient with computers. Humane Agents must conduct themselves in a responsible and positive manner at all times. All agents report directly to the Chief Humane Agent. This position is of the utmost importance to JCHS, as well as to the animals and residents of Jefferson County. The ideal candidate would have a background in law enforcement and animal care. OPOTA certification in Humane Agent training is preferred but not required, as training will be provided. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to run, climb over or under objects, lift over 50 lbs, and handle/examine domestic and farm animals. A valid driver's license with a good driving record is also required, along with the ability to pass criminal history and pet cruelty background checks, as well as drug screening. The ideal candidate must also have the ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, and the general public, and must respect animals and believe in the Humane Society's mission and philosophy. Part-time hours may vary depending on need and can include nights and weekends.
