Job Description

The St. Louis County Government Department of Public Health is looking for a Forensic Investigator to join their team. The Office of the Medical Examiner is responsible for investigating all sudden, unexpected, suspicious, unnatural or violent death or deaths that represent a threat to public health. The Investigators will evaluate and investigate reportable deaths according to defined policies and procedures to meet state and local laws. The work schedule consists of rotating three-month shifts to support 24/7 operations. The position works 10-hour shifts 4 days per week, which may include weekends and holidays. Shift hours are 8:00 am
  • 6:00 pm for the daytime rotation and 10:00 pm
  • 8:00 am for the overnight rotation. Hours and days may vary based on the needs of the office. There is a 10% shift differential for overnight shifts. The typical starting salary range will be $ 55,536
  • $66,643 annually depending on the candidate's qualifications and experience as well as budgetary considerations.

Essential Function Examples Assess death reports to determine the extent of investigation required to close any given case. Perform scene investigations and determine associated facts related to death to assist in determination of cause and manner of death. Establish scientific positive identification of decedent, communicate with family members to notify them of decedent's death and determine disposition of remains. Share investigative, forensic and medical information with involved agencies. Marginal Function Examples Perform other duties as required or assigned. Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and one year of related experience. Possession of an AMBDI (American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators) Certification within two years of employment. A current, valid driver's license is also required.
SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT
A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire. The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision. All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be covered by the County.
