This is an At-Will classification under the direction of and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff/Coroner.
Please Note:
Submission of successful performance evaluations over the past five (5) years is required to be considered for this position. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Provides leadership to and direct supervision of Lieutenants in assigned location of the Sheriff's Operation. Responsible for evaluating staff performance to ensure accountability and efficiency of work performed. Understands the mission and philosophy of the Sheriff's Department and leads their staff utilizing these fundamental principles. Effectively manages staff and develops them through coaching and mentoring. Due to nature of a 24/7 operation, may be required to work variable days and/or shifts. Initiate, develop and implement, independently or under general direction programs and activities of the assigned operation or Correctional Facility. Assist the Undersheriff in short term and long term planning of the department. Assist in the development and administration of the budget, grants, contract and special funding.

Administer financial operations of the department.

Develop recommendations and implement activities designed to accomplish goals and ensures compliance with State, departmental and institutional procedures and regulations. Ensure compliance with departmental, institutional, County, State and Federal procedures, regulations, resolutions and laws. Assists in the department selection of staff and ensure training requirements are met; schedules staff and makes assignments. Plans, assigns, schedules, supervise and evaluates the activities of assigned personnel; increase awareness of risk aversion and risk analysis through mandatory training and implementation. Coordinate the work of the assigned division or facility and with other divisions of the department. Ensure safety procedures of the operation and facility and personnel are met and that violations are corrected. Provides direction to subordinates and remedies potential problems, takes necessary action when alerted of emergency and potentially dangerous situations. Develops and ensures good public relations.

Prepares a variety of oral and written reports. Keeps Undersheriff fully informed of operations and potential problems. Assists in the planning and implementation of overall departmental policies.

Assists in determining the future needs of the department in terms of personnel and equipment.

Evaluates complaints from the public and from their own staff, reports and makes recommendations to the Undersheriff. Researches, evaluates, proposes and makes written recommendations to the Undersheriff on future changes within their assigned divisions. Coordinate the activities of the division with other agencies and other city, county, and State or Federal offices.

If assigned to Sheriff - Operations may also: Supervise and conduct investigations; interview and interrogate suspects; occasionally go on patrol.

Supervise and participate in collecting, recording and holding evidence.

Responsibility for the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and inventory.

Ensures proper preparation of material for court; oversees all administrative functions of assigned division.

If assigned to Sheriff - Corrections may also: Inspects facility for proper operation, deterioration of equipment and security of the institution and takes measures to have problems reported and corrected.

Helps resolve inmate problems, coordinates programs with other agencies.

Ensures facility remains in compliance with all County, State and Federal resolutions and laws.

Follow the Bureau of Corrections standards, Penal Code and all other applicable Federal and State law.

OperationsExperience:
Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity performing duties equivalent to those of a Lieutenant in the Merced County Sheriff's Department. An AA, Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Business, Administration, Criminal Justice or other closely related field can substitute for the one (1) year of the required experience.
Certificate:
Possession of a current and valid advanced and supervisory certificates issued by the California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Education:
Completion of sixty (60) college units.
License:
Possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment and maintain.
Performance:
Successful performance evaluations over the past five (5) years.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

CorrectionsExperience:
Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity performing duties equivalent to those of a Lieutenant in the Merced County Sheriff's Office. An AA, Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Business, Administration, Criminal Justice or other closely related field can substitute for the one (1) year of the required experience.
Certificate:
Must complete Basic Jail Operations Course and Supervisor's Course approved by the California Standards and Training for Corrections within one year from date of appointment as Captain.
Education:
Completion of sixty (60) college units.
License:
Possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment and maintain.
Performance:
Successful performance evaluations over the past five (5) years.
