Job Description
CORRECTIONS OFFICER
The Corrections Officer is appointed by the Director of Court Services and Probation with the approval of the Chief Circuit Judge and has a Shift Supervisor or Acting Shift Supervisor as his/her immediate supervisor. At the discretion of the Director the appointee will serve a six month probationary period. DUTIES andRESPONSIBILITIES
The duties and responsibilities of the Corrections Officer will include, but not be limited to the following: 1.Be available to assume and discharge the traditional duties or responsibilities of a detention officer as determined by management. 2.Provide supervision, guidance, care, and secure custody for youth held in detention. 3.Strive to attain constructive relationships with all residents by developing trust and mutual respect, and by learning the interests, abilities, and problems of the youth. 4.Maintain direct involvement with youth by being present on the detention floor. 5.Encourage appropriate behavior of residents through positive verbal communication. 6.Intervene in the event of an infraction of established rules and regulation. 7.In crisis situations, respond accordingly using the least physical force necessary and re-establish direct contact with the youth upon stabilization of the situation. 8.Maintain security by having constant visual contact and random room searches. 9.Maintain safe and secure transport of juveniles as directed. 10.Maintain a safe environment for residents and staff. 11.Attend and participate in youth staffing, staff meetings, and/or training programs as assigned by the Superintendent. 12.Demonstrate support for fellow employees in the course of the performance of the job. 13.Maintain ability to work without supervision, but also possess ability to take direction or supervision and utilize a team approach to working with residents, detention officers, and other probation and court services personnel.QUALIFICATIONS
All applicants for the position of Juvenile Corrections Officer must minimally meet the following qualifications for appointment: Obtain a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. Be certified eligible for hire by the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts. Have no prior felony convictions and suspended felony imposition cases. Be a resident of St. Clair County within six months of appointment, a U.S. citizen, and resident of Illinois within 90 days of appointment. Must be 21 years of age or upwards. Possess strong time management and organization skills. Possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Possess a valid driver's license.
