Job Description

The Ashe County Sheriff's Office is currently looking to hire a full-time Female Detention Officer to supervise the inmate population. This position is a night shift position working 4 days on and 4 days off 6pm-6am, there may be future opportunity to move to a dayshift position if desired(depending on availability). Working in a detention center requires a special person who has the ability to operate under pressure, pay close attention to detail and manage the stresses and demands that detention work can bring. For the right person though, being a Detention Officer is an exciting and highly rewarding law enforcement career path.   • The Detention Officer is responsible for the security, supervision and transportation of inmates in the Ashe County Detention Center.
The Detention Officer performs a variety of duties; direct supervision of inmates, Booking desk duty, Control Tower operations and transportation of inmates inside and even outside of the detention center. The Detention Officer works under the direct supervision of that employee's shift sergeant. Detention Officers must be willing to work 12-hour rotating shifts which includes nights, holidays and weekends
DUTIES:
  • Patrols the detention center, maintains head-counts of inmates, and maintains the security of gates and doors within and outside of the detention center.
  • Answers the phone, files inmate folders and keep records of inmates' visitation, showers, and other procedures.
  • Processing new inmates, searching inmates, and collects property from inmates and advises all inmates of policies that govern their conduct while in the detention facility.
  • Supervises the cleanliness of inmates, their quarters, the surrounding area, and their laundry.
  • Assist in serving meals to inmates.
  • Transports and escorts inmates to various locations
  • Assist in controlling combative inmates
  • Performs other duties and work as required The Ashe County Sheriff's Office requires all Detention Officers to attended and graduate from a recognized 174 hour D.
O.C.C. (Detention Officer Certification Course) academy in North Carolina within the fist year of their employment. Candidates can be hired immediately in the Detention Center, even without D.O.C.C. school certification, but will have to be scheduled for an upcoming D.O.C.C. class at Wilkes Community College within the first few months of their employment. Ashe County Detention Officers must meet or exceed all basic, specialized and continuing education training as mandated by North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards. "Detention Officer" means: any person performing responsibilities, either on a full-time, part-time, permanent or temporary basis, which include but are not limited to the control, care and supervision of any inmates incarcerated in a county jail or other confinement facility under the direct supervision and management of the sheriff. "Detention Officer" shall also mean the administrator and other custodial personnel of district confinement facilities as defined in G.S. 153A-219.'
