Correctional Officer

Northern Neck Regional Jail is a regional correctional facility committed to safety and security. We're looking for Correctional Officers to join our team and help maintain a safe, secure, and professional environment for staff, inmates and visitors. This position offers an engaging opportunity to serve the community while developing your law enforcement and conflict management skills in a dynamic setting. What you'll do (day to day responsibilities) Monitor and supervise inmate activities and behavior through CCTV surveillance systems to ensure compliance with facility regulations. Conduct regular head counts, security checks, patrols of the correctional facility to maintain security and identify potential issues. Respond promptly to incidents or disturbances, utilizing conflict management techniques to de-escalate situations. Enforce rules and regulations by supervising inmate activities, including meal times, recreation, and work assignments. Complete required reports and documentation clearly and accurately (i.e. incident reports, log entries) to maintain accurate records. Administer first aid or CPR when necessary, providing immediate assistance in emergencies. Collaborate with law enforcement agencies during investigations or external operations as required. Communicate and work professionally with fellow staff, outside agencies and visitors Participate in required training and follow all policies, procedures, and legal standards What we're looking for (qualifications & qualities)

Required:

High School Diploma or GED Must be 18 years old - per state and local requirements Ability to pass background investigation, drug screening, and any required physical or medical evaluations Valid driver's license and reliable transportation Ability to work shift schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays Preferred (nice to have): Prior experience in law enforcement, security, military service, or related fields is highly desirable. Familiarity with CCTV systems and surveillance technology is preferred. Certification in first aid and CPR is advantageous; willingness to obtain these certifications if not already held. Strong conflict management skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure. Experience in report writing with attention to detail is essential for accurate documentation of incidents. Knowledge of security protocols and law enforcement procedures enhances effectiveness in this role.
