Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Join the Wyoming Department of Corrections to pursue an exciting field in law enforcement. We seek motivated individuals to be Correctional Officers in the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington, Wyoming. This facility serves as a primary education and treatment center for inmates identified as requiring high levels of protective custody, as well as those who need medical, mental health, dental, substance abuse, life skills, cognitive and behavioral, and/or sex offender treatment services. The Wyoming Department of Corrections operates this medium-security facility. The WDOC is committed to public safety, high correctional standards, and a safe, supportive working environment for our employees. We now seek Correctional Officers for our institutions. This position is essential for maintaining the institution's safety and security and is considered a Law Enforcement position, and is receiving a 20-year retirement package. Successful candidates are awarded Correctional Officer Certification by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission within one year of initial appointment and receive excellent training. FUNCTIONS
The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level. To maintain institutional safety standards, the position requires the following: Enforcement of rules and regulations. Responding to post orders of varied assigned posts. Supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate, pro-social behavior. Assisting in a variety of searches, including checking for contraband items. Observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas, and the perimeter fence line, reporting security violations. Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates. Assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers, and inmate living areas, monitoring inmate movements. Becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions. Assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing the minimum amount of force required. Assisting in transporting inmates within and off institution boundaries, including inter- and intra-state predetermined destinations. Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the appropriate out-processing of released inmates. Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level.   • Must be at least 18 years of age, have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen,
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of security measures, techniques, and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure institution.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen, and other pre-employment testing prior to the appointment. Candidates must have the ability to work overtime as required and the ability to work on any shift, holidays, and weekends.
