Job Description

Category Schools - Visually Impaired Teacher Job Type Contract An exciting contract opportunity awaits for a dedicated professional skilled in teaching students with visual impairments. This role serves multiple sites within an established district near the New Orleans area, supporting students across a range of grade levels for the upcoming academic year (August 2026 - May 2027). The schedule involves 35 hours per week, with travel expected between school locations. Responsibilities in this impactful position include: Traveling daily to various assigned schools to provide direct services and specialized instruction to visually impaired students. Facilitating and interpreting the needs of students with visual impairments to ensure access to an equitable educational experience. Providing training for school personnel to foster inclusive support and appropriate accommodations. Sourcing and adapting instructional materials (including textbooks) suitable for visually impaired learners. Collaborating closely with classroom teachers to deliver reading and learning materials in accessible formats. Maintaining ongoing communication with both the local district and the Louisiana Department of Education. Training students and teachers in the use of assistive technology, and providing Braille instruction. Performing other related duties as assigned.
Desired skills and qualifications:
Bachelor's degree with current Louisiana DOE certification and a credential in teaching the visually impaired (required). At least three years of teaching or special education experience, preferably including multiple educational settings. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, with a proven ability to inspire both students and colleagues. Knowledge of assistive technology and familiarity with orientation and mobility training is highly valued. Professionalism and adaptability for itinerant work and changing student needs. Ability to pass required drug screening and fingerprinting for district clearance.
