EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
About the Work UnitThis work unit receives, catalogs, stores and maintains the integrity of evidence, found property, evidentiary evidence and property for safekeeping. Work Environment50% -active work moving, lifting, organizing objects50% -office work including data entryAbout the JobThe Evidence section is responsible for the preservation of all found property, safekeeping of property, and evidence coming into the possession of the Colorado State Patrol. As a specialized business unit, must adhere to state and federal rules and regulations regarding evidence and industry best practices as delineated by International Association for Property and Evidence (IAPE) accreditation.

Key ResponsibilitiesCollection, Handling, Packaging, Transporting, Storage, Managing, Releasing, and Destruction of Property and Evidence This position is responsible for processing, storing, cataloging, releasing, purging and destruction of all property and evidence gathered and stored in CSP evidence facilities. Safeguards and maintains property integrity and chain of evidence and ensures that all releases and dispositions of property are legal and properly documented. Catalogs evidence and maintains and updates property and evidence documentation and records. Completes chain of custody entries and may testify in court, as applicable. Travels to remote locations to transport property and evidence routinely. Is exposed to various potential biohazards and potential hazardous materials on a daily basis.

Receives and inspects all incoming property and evidence into the property room to ensure packaging, proper entry of items. Confirms receipt of all property logged in by officers. Releases property and evidence, to officers in accordance with agency written directives and procedures, for trial or for the purpose of having evidence analyzed and maintains property chain of custody procedures.

Releases property and evidence to victims, suspects, owners, and other law enforcement officers in accordance with policies, laws, and best practices. Maintains property room documentation by making entry into the computer system and attaches documents into electronic cases.

Responsible for researching case dispositions through court databases and entering the disposition into computer systems. Maintains and secures the property control room(s). Ensures property control room(s) adheres to professional accreditation standards. Tracks and accounts for high-valued or sensitive items recovered. Advises external evidence technicians on proper packaging, handling, and submission of unusual evidence. Coaches and trains new CSP evidence technicians Provides technical guidance to internal and external stakeholders Determines how to properly secure packaging or repackage evidence that arrives at CSP improperly packaged. LiaisonThis position is responsible for articulating agency key policies, positions and strategies, interpreting and applying policy and procedures to internal and external stakeholders and the public. This position also promotes the philosophies and programs implemented by the agency, serving as the agency's principle liaison with all other law enforcement agencies in a geographical area. Possesses excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrating tact and diplomacy to consistently interact effectively with all members to include internal and external partners. Writes necessary reports that are thorough, precise, appropriate and timely. Provides accurate, truthful and complete reporting in all formats.

Answers questions from the uniformed members of the Colorado State Patrol regarding evidence procedures, and activities of the unit; participates in community meetings, including oral presentations. Interprets, apply, and make decisions in accordance with applicable federal, state and local policies, laws and regulations. Serves as the department's principal liaison with all other law enforcement agencies in the geographical area regarding evidence transfers, submissions and processes. Proactively identify, establish and maintain professional relationships with external partners to increase information sharing, mutual aid and leverage shared resources to address public safety challenges.

Confirms information is effectively communicated to others through the use of interpersonal and leadership skills. Meets with other public safety agencies to provide education on the roles, functions and traditions of the Colorado State Patrol. This position must possess the ability to build effective partnerships with diverse external and internal partners, including state, federal and other agencies.
