This position requires a Civil Service Examination which is tentatively scheduled to occur the week of May 18, 2026. Exact date, time and testing i nformation will be provided to qualified candidates after the posting has closed. Qualified candidates will be notified via email of schedule and testing specifics. Once the exam has been completed, the candidate will receive a score and/or rank depending on their test performance. Upon successfully passing the exam, the candidate will be placed on the eligibility list which will then be used to refer candidates for potential interviews. The background process constitutes a comprehensive investigation due to the confidential and sensitive information this person will have access to. A State of Nevada and national fingerprint check as well as a Wants/Warrants check will be administered to confirm the selected candidate has no felony or gross misdemeanor arrests without disposition, no felony or gross misdemeanor convictions or to confirm that the applicant is not a fugitive from justice, all of which could be disqualifying. Under direct supervision, perform technical work related to the collection, safekeeping, processing and preservation of crime scene evidence.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a single class position expected to perform a variety of assignments under supervision, including detailed inspections and careful handling of evidence to ensure proper presentation for case prosecution. Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications to continue in the recruitment process:Education and Experience :
High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience in a law enforcement setting or closely related field.Licenses and Certificates :
Must possess within thirty (30) days of hire and maintain throughout employment, the equivalent to a valid Nevada Class C driver's license. Must possess within six (6) months of hire and maintain throughout employment, a validNCIC/CJIS
Certification. Must possess within two (2) years of hire and maintain throughout employment, an International Association of Property and Evidence (IAEP) certification. Perform the daily maintenance in the chain of custody of evidence collected. Perform technical work related to the collection, safekeeping, processing and preservation of crime scene evidence. Provide detailed inspections and careful handling of evidence to ensure proper presentation for case prosecution. Record, analyze and preserve crime scene evidence. Process crime scene photos. Prepare detailed reports of crime scene evidence and property obtained. After the execution of a search warrant, assist in gathering evidence on scene. Examine crime scene for and collect and preserve evidence from crime scene, victims and suspects, such as blood, swabbing for bodily fluids, hair samples, fingernail clippings and gunshot residue. Photograph crime scene and victims including traffic accidents, property damage, accident victims, shoeprints, autopsies, stolen property and possible arson sites. Enter and collect data and process information in related databases and systems, including but not limited to make cases, share cases with other agencies, create cases from CAD reports weekly, process police public records requests and related research, redact and share videos/photos with appropriate person, coordinate with the City Clerk's Office and the Fire department to support their public records requests and related research, and process subpoena duces tecum through same process. Book and maintain secured evidence. Enter and update evidence information on a computer system and generate detailed reports and information. Process evidence for later court presentation. Take evidence to court as required. Provide court testimony related to evidence as required. Receive property and issue receipts. Categorize and store property which has been found or turned in as evidence. Release property to rightful owner after ensuring proper authorization for release. Participate in the public records request process pertaining to digital evidence and the review and redaction of body worn and fleet camera footage. Dust crime scene for latent fingerprints using appropriate process to lift prints for suspect comparison and may fingerprint suspects. Dispose of evidence, including drugs and firearms in accordance with federal and state law enforcement, OSHA, state, city or departmental rules and regulations. Coordinate with the Financial Service Department to deposit money into appropriate fund. Coordinate with vendors to send items to auction. Coordinate with the City Attorney's office on forfeitures. Operate and maintain equipment for lab, photographic and field use. Perform office duties including typing and recordkeeping. Order supplies and maintain inventories. Perform janitorial duties in secured areas. Train Police Recruits and other new employees on the evidence database and evidence procedures. Participate in and train during annual in-service. Perform other duties which may be assigned.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and ordinances pertaining to the work Knowledge of principles and practices of emergency management Knowledge of basic law enforcement organization, activities, terminology and regulations Knowledge of procedures, techniques, principles and methods of property and evidence collection, processing, receiving, storing and inventory Knowledge of principles for safely handling dangerous substances, weapons and firearms Knowledge of recordkeeping principles and practices including filing and indexing a variety of evidence reports and other written materials Ability to operate assigned vehicles safely and efficiently Ability to practice safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work Ability to operate photographic and laboratory equipment effectively Ability to present accurate and detailed information related to evidence in court cases Skill and ability to provide effective customer service and conduct presentations Ability to use initiative and sound judgment within established guidelines Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with those contacted during work, including a variety of people and diverse groups and businesses Ability to use computer applications and software related to the work including but not limited to Microsoft Office Ability to train others in work proceduresPhysical Demands :
Aside from working in a general office environment, in which the majority of the work is sedentary in nature with major exposure to computer screens, the person in this position will be expected to cope with and be effective in the face of emergency or stressful situations, workplace stressors such as, but not limited to, exposure to information that may be sensitive and graphic and may be emotionally difficult to process, customer service complaints, maintaining the security of information and people and property. Requires ability to squat, crouch and kneel, sometimes in confined spaces. Requires sufficient strength and stamina to climb stairs and ladders and stand and walk for extended periods of time in various terrain and adverse weather conditions. Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to fifty (50) lbs. Must be able to carefully and safely handle hazardous materials including drugs and firearms.
