This lateral position is intended for an experienced law enforcement professional with proven investigative ability, sound judgment, and the ability to manage complex cases with professionalism, accuracy, and integrity. Detectives conduct thorough, objective investigations in accordance with department policy, applicable law, and professional standards while maintaining confidentiality and organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following: Serves as an ambassador for the Town of Timnath, representing the department with professionalism, integrity, and discretion in all interactions. Conducts criminal investigations involving felony and misdemeanor offenses, including crimes against persons, property crimes, domestic violence, fraud, juvenile matters, and other assigned cases. Assumes responsibility for assigned cases from initial review through disposition, including follow-up investigation, documentation, evidence coordination, and preparation for prosecution. Interviews victims, witnesses, reporting parties, suspects, and other individuals connected to criminal investigations using trauma-informed, legally appropriate, and professional communication techniques. Identifies, collects, preserves, processes, and documents physical, digital, and testimonial evidence in accordance with legal standards and departmental procedures. Prepares and executes search warrants, arrest warrants, subpoenas, preservation requests, and other investigative documents as needed. Maintains complete, accurate, and organized investigative case files, reports, evidence records, and related documentation. Works collaboratively with patrol officers, supervisors, prosecutors, victim advocates, social service providers, schools, regional task forces, and partner law enforcement agencies. Coordinates with the District Attorney's Office to ensure cases are complete, timely, and prepared for filing, prosecution, hearings, and trial. Testifies in court, administrative hearings, depositions, and other legal proceedings as required. Responds to crime scenes, critical incidents, and callouts as needed to assist with investigative response, scene management, interviews, evidence collection, and follow-up. Conducts surveillance, background research, intelligence gathering, database inquiries, and analytical reviews to support case development. Provides investigative guidance and support to patrol officers on report quality, evidence collection, case screening, and follow-up needs. Engages in proactive community policing and problem-solving efforts that support crime prevention, victim support, and public trust. Demonstrates a commitment to ongoing training and professional development in investigative techniques, interview methods, legal updates, evidence practices, digital investigations, and related topics. This position may be temporarily reassigned to meet urgent operational needs of the agency. Performs other related duties as assigned to support department goals and operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Working knowledge of modern investigative principles, criminal law, patrol operations, case management, and law enforcement best practices. Familiarity with federal, state, and local laws, constitutional requirements, rules of evidence, search and seizure standards, interview procedures, and legal guidelines applicable to criminal investigations. Proficiency in case screening, report writing, evidence handling, warrant preparation, suspect identification, victim and witness interviews, and courtroom testimony. Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex information and make sound investigative decisions under pressure. Ability to manage multiple active cases, meet deadlines, prioritize investigative tasks, and maintain organized and defensible case files. Skilled in the safe and responsible operation of department-issued vehicles, equipment, technology, records systems, investigative databases, and digital evidence platforms. Maintains discretion and confidentiality when handling sensitive investigations, protected information, victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential sources. Exercises sound judgment and initiative during investigative response, crime scene coordination, interviews, case follow-up, and emergency situations. Communicates effectively in investigative reports, affidavits, victim and witness contacts, suspect interviews, public interactions, interagency coordination, and court testimony. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive working relationships within the department, with partner agencies, and with community members from diverse backgrounds. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while contributing to a respectful, accountable, and collaborative investigative team environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education High School Diploma or GED required; associate's degree, bachelor's degree, or college coursework in criminal justice, criminology, public administration, psychology, sociology, forensic science, or a related field preferred. Experience Minimum of five (5) years of full-time law enforcement experience as a P.O.S.T

• certified peace officer, with at least two (2) years of demonstrated detective, criminal investigative, or comparable specialized investigative experience preferred.

Experience conducting follow-up investigations, preparing investigative reports, managing case files, interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects, handling evidence, and working with prosecutors is strongly preferred. Colorado P.O.S.T. certification preferred; current eligibility for Colorado P.O.S.T. certification or out-of-state peace officer certification with the ability to obtain Colorado P.O.S.T. certification in accordance with state requirements.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age. Must be a United States citizen at the time of application. Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, physical examination, polygraph examination, and psychological examination prior to commencing employment. Must meet current hiring standards, including: Valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification or other state equivalent. Applicants who are retired or separated must apply within 20 months of separation, have been in good standing at the time of retirement or separation, and possess current P.O.S.T. certification or a state equivalent. To qualify for lateral entry as a Police Detective, applicants must possess at least five (5) years of full-time law enforcement experience as a sworn peace officer, including two (2) years of demonstrated detective, criminal investigative, or comparable specialized investigative experience. Academy training does not count toward the minimum experience requirement. Experience accumulated exclusively in a correctional facility, District Attorney's Office, or as a federal or military police officer may be reviewed but is not automatically considered qualifying lateral detective experience. Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license or obtain one within 30 days of employment. Must currently possess a Basic Certificate issued by the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Board, or equivalent. External candidates must obtain Colorado P.O.S.T. certification within six (6) months of hire.

Out of state candidates must obtain a Provisional Certification | Colorado POST before the first day of employment and must successfully challenge Colorado POST within 6 months of obtaining a Colorado Provisional POST Certification letter. TPD will support candidates challenging Colorado POST. Must have no disqualifying conduct, including: Felony convictions Any felony conviction, no contest plea, deferred judgment, or deferred sentence. Any misdemeanor conviction within the past three (3) years. Certain misdemeanor offenses, as defined by Colorado P.O.S.T., that would affect peace officer certification in Colorado. Disqualifying Incidents | Colorado POST Domestic violence convictions. Any illicit drug use within the past 3 years (includes LSD, heroin, cocaine, PCP, mushrooms/psilocybin, amphetamines, inhalants, steroids, etc.) Use of any illegal drug, on or off duty, while employed as a law enforcement officer. WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical and environmental demands described below are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of the Police Detective position. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, balance, reach, grasp, speak, hear, and see with sufficient clarity to perform essential duties. Occasionally required to run, push, pull, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and physically restrain combative individuals. Must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Must maintain physical and mental stamina to respond effectively during extended shifts, emergencies, or physically demanding situations. Required to wear a duty belt and gear weighing approximately 15-20 pounds during 10-hour shifts. Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Must be able to read, write, and communicate clearly in English. Duties are performed in various environments, including office settings, patrol vehicles, and outdoor locations, often in inclement or extreme temperatures. Exposure to loud noises, hazardous materials, fumes, airborne particles, vibrations, and potentially dangerous or unpredictable situations is common. This role involves a high degree of risk due to interactions with potentially violent individuals, emotionally distressed persons, and hazardous conditions, including traffic-related dangers. Frequently exposed to high-stress and potentially life-threatening situations requiring calm, decisive action. Shift work is required, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as operational needs demand. On-call availability may be required for major incidents, after-hours investigative needs, crime scene response, search warrants, or time-sensitive follow-up.
