Job Description

Summary Objective
THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT, FULL-TIME, REGULAR
(NON-PROBATIONARY)
EMPLOYEES OF THE LOUISVILLE METRO POLICE DEPARTMENT
The purpose of this position is to perform routine investigative and case management work. Clarifies facts and carries out research activities in apprehending persons guilty of various criminal offenses. This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. This position reports to the Office of Sexual and Physical Investigations (OSPI). Job duties specific to this unit include conducting investigations into violations of the Sex Offender Registry and human trafficking related offenses. Queries the National Crime Information Center, Kentucky Law Information Network Systems, and local court or public safety systems for related information. Completes and processes forms, documents and correspondence according to established procedures. Explains and provides information to citizens regarding laws, statutes, ordinances, codes, rules and regulations. Interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects involved in investigations. Completes thorough background investigations using law enforcement tools. Assists in the investigation as directed. Complies with incident reporting standards. Provides testimony in court when needed. Assists sworn investigators with the drafting and preparation of warrants. Performs related work as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology or related discipline. Two (2) years of experience as a criminal investigator or a sworn officer in a law enforcement agency, specializing in the investigation of criminal activity.
EQUIVALENCY
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be substituted.
Desired qualifications:
Investigative experience related to crimes against children and/or sexual offenses.
OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must not have been convicted of a felony or have any criminal action pending against them. An applicant may be disqualified for multiple misdemeanors, an unacceptable criminal record, or multiple traffic violations. Must submit to a pre-employment drug screening. Must submit to a pre-employment polygraph test. Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check. Must provide one's own source of transportation. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. Must work a varied schedule. Must not have retired, resigned, or separated from employment with a law enforcement agency under investigation or due to pending or final disciplinary actions. Must be willing to complete additional training as required/requested by supervisory staff, which includes the willingness to travel to complete the training. Ability to exercise discretion with confidential information as required by State law and department policy. Applicants who have illegally bought or used marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within six months of application will be disqualified. Applicants who have illegally sold marijuana, including medicinal cannabis, within one year of application will be disqualified. Applicants who have illegally bought, sold, or used any controlled substance or narcotic drug, other than marijuana, without a prescription within six years of application will be disqualified.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
