Job Description

The City of Port St. Lucie is an equal opportunity employer. This position requires the applicant to successfully pass a drug screening. Because this position involves shift work, each location an employee reports to is considered a separate shift. Travel between these locations is part of the normal workday and is not considered compensable time. Responsible for the supervision of the School Crossing Guards, ensuring the safety of students crossing traffic. Oversee, coordinate, schedule, fill-in and enforce rules and regulations of the Police Department equally to all School Crossing Guards. The position is considered a working supervisor. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City. This position is considered an "Essential Position" for the purpose of Emergency Management. Emergency duties will be assigned as needed. This position requires 24 hours a day, 7 days per week availability during City of Port St Lucie emergencies, as determined by City Administrators, Emergency Manager or City Officials. The following duties are illustrative for this position. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned. Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations. Escorts children across the street going to and returning home from school. Observes and records names of operators and license numbers of vehicles violating traffic regulations at a school crosswalk. Reports violators to the Department. Responsible for Payroll and Telestaff accuracy for all school crossing guards, ensuring all work is entered correctly. Keep a record of school crossing guard daily attendance. Assists the School Crossing Guard Manager in collecting monthly mileage and accurately inputting the mileage for each guard in Munis for reimbursement. May work with Finance to request vendor numbers for mileage reimbursement and create spreadsheets to keep track of mileage. Schedule, both post assignments and special details and events. Provide a training class for each school crossing guard on an annual basis, which is required in the School Crossing Guard Guidelines Statues. Responsible for the purchasing and inventory of all school crossing guards' uniforms, and safety equipment. Issue uniforms and equipment, when necessary, inspect school crossing guard equipment and when necessary, request new equipment. Assists management in resolving all complaints against school crossing guards. Coverage for School Crossing Guard Manager during their absence. Other duties as may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. A minimum of one (1) year of experience as a School Crossing Guard or a minimum of two (2) years of related experience in working for a Law Enforcement Agency. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Possession of Florida Crime Information Center (FCIC)/ National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certificate required. Possession of valid Florida driver's license and maintenance of clean driving record required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge of municipal ordinances regulating the movement of traffic at a school crosswalk. Ability to work with children and to instruct them in the need for crossing streets in a safe manner. Ability to enforce firmly and impartially the laws and ordinances relating to the area of work. Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally. Ability to focus on the positive in every situation. Ability to model respect for individuals, teams, and the organization. Ability to stay centered when challenged. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the public. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to follow through with assigned tasks. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to react and control an emergency situation for the safety of children.
