GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the general supervision of the Chief of Police or designee, the School Crossing Guard is responsible for assisting school children and pedestrians in safely crossing designated streets and intersections before and after school. The Crossing Guard monitors traffic and pedestrian activity, promotes safe crossing practices, and helps maintain a safe and orderly environment within assigned school crossing areas.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are representative of the work performed by the School Crossing Guard. This position may be required to perform additional duties as assigned. Report to the assigned crossing location on time and remain at the designated location for the entire scheduled work period. Safely assist school children and other pedestrians in crossing streets and intersections at designated school crossing locations. Observe traffic conditions and determine when it is safe for pedestrians to enter and cross the roadway. Use authorized crossing equipment, hand signals, and procedures to alert motorists and control pedestrian movement. Instruct children to wait at a safe location and cross only when directed. Promote and reinforce safe pedestrian behavior, including the use of designated crosswalks and compliance with traffic signals. Remain alert to approaching vehicles, hazardous roadway conditions, unsafe driver behavior, and other potential safety concerns. Immediately report traffic hazards, unsafe conditions, suspicious activity, accidents, injuries, or other emergencies to the Police Department or appropriate emergency personnel. Maintain order and professionalism at the assigned crossing location. Communicate courteously and effectively with students, parents, school personnel, motorists, residents, and City employees. Maintain assigned uniforms, safety equipment, and crossing equipment in a clean and serviceable condition. Attend required training, safety meetings, and departmental briefings. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must possess the following qualifications: High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate preferred. Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to communicate clearly, professionally, and effectively with children, motorists, school personnel, City employees, and members of the public. Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain alert while working in or near vehicular traffic. Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision. Ability to maintain a dependable work attendance record and report to work on time. Ability to successfully complete all required background investigations, pre-employment screening, and training. Ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely perform the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described below are representative of those required to perform the essential functions of this position: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and other seasonal conditions. Ability to walk across streets and intersections repeatedly during assigned work periods. Ability to see and hear approaching vehicles, pedestrians, emergency warnings, and other potential hazards. Ability to communicate verbally with children, motorists, school personnel, and emergency responders. Ability to raise, extend, and use the arms and hands to provide authorized crossing signals. Ability to safely wear and use required safety equipment and uniform items. Ability to respond quickly to changing traffic and pedestrian conditions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed primarily outdoors at designated school crossings and intersections. The employee may be exposed to moving traffic, vehicle exhaust, noise, adverse weather conditions, uneven surfaces, and other hazards associated with working near public roadways. The employee may be required to work during periods of limited visibility, including early morning hours.
