Job Description
Position Summary:
- Due to continued organizational growth and increasing regulatory complexity, the Environmental Compliance Specialist plays a critical role in supporting Penske's commitment to operating in an environmentally responsible manner and in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Major Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine environmental compliance site visits across assigned locations, evaluating hazardous waste management, storage tanks, stormwater conditions, and overall environmental controls.
- Perform internal environmental compliance reviews in alignment with corporate audit and self-review programs; document findings and initiate corrective actions.
- Support and attend regulatory inspections conducted by federal, state, and local agencies; assist with coordination, communication, and follow-up actions.
- Track, manage, and drive completion of corrective actions to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal standards.
- Provide on-site guidance and environmental support to operations and maintenance teams, reinforcing proper handling, storage, and documentation practices.
- Support environmental training efforts by reinforcing requirements in the field and assessing training effectiveness during site visits.
- Assist with the implementation of new or evolving operational programs, including mobile maintenance operations, customer on-site locations, and facility startups or transitions.
- Coordinate with environmental vendors, contractors, and consultants to support waste management, tank compliance, and other environmental activities.
- Provide field support for environmental projects, including spill response, storage tank activities, stormwater controls, and environmental assessments.
- Perform additional environmental duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational/Industrial Hygiene, Safety, or a related field.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in an environmental compliance role supporting industrial, transportation, or multi-site operations.
- Strong working knowledge of federal EPA regulations and applicable state environmental programs, including: o Hazardous waste management (RCRA) o Hazardous materials / chemical inventory reporting (e.g., Tier II or state equivalents) o Storage tank compliance (UST/AST) o Stormwater compliance (NPDES permits, SWPPP implementation) o Wastewater and air compliance fundamentals
- Experience supporting environmental inspections, managing corrective actions, and coordinating with regulatory agencies.
- Ability to apply regulatory requirements in operational environments and translate them into practical field execution.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively with operations teams, vendors, and regulators.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications; experience with environmental or EHS data management systems preferred.
- Ability to travel up to 70% of work time. Valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record required.
- Preferred qualifications include professional certifications such as CHMM, PE, PG, REM, or REP; multi-site operational experience; and bilingual fluency in English and Spanish.
