  • Tourist Rooming House Sanitarian position within the Division of Food and Recreational Safety, Bureau of Food and Recreational Businesses.
This is a field-based position and the selected applicant will be headquartered in Walworth County. Qualifying candidates are not required to live in the county headquarter location. However, reimbursement for commuting to or from the employee's assigned headquarters is not provided (e.g., mileage, meals, parking, lodging, etc.). Routine travel within an assigned territory and throughout the state for assigned work and emergency response is required. This posting may be used to fill future similar vacancies. Position Summary This position is responsible for enforcement of recreational health safety laws, administrative codes, regulations and standards governing the lodging program (Tourist Rooming Houses) under the authority of Wisconsin Statues.
Work responsibilities include:
On-site evaluation, inspection, documentation of sanitation, and hazards \ application of codes and statutes; providing technical consultation and educational services to business owners/operators, local and state officials, and the public, etc. Additionally, staff are responsible for preparing reports and taking or recommending enforcement action as outlined in applicable codes and statutes. This includes the ability to issue, deny, or in some instances, issue closure orders when an imminent health threat is found. Employee will coordinate with necessary supervisors, technical specialists, epidemiologists, and other state and federal agencies to investigate consumer complaints. 60%
  •  Perform evaluation, inspection, and documentation activities for tourist rooming houses in assigned geographic territory or as directed by management staff. This includes but is not limited to review of systems, equipment, and general safety and sanitary conditions. 15%
  • Responsible for recommending or taking enforcement action where appropriate following facility, equipment, and/or product evaluation. This includes following up on complaints and taking appropriate action as dictated by applicable statutes, codes, standards, and policies. 10%
  • Provision of consultation, education and training services to industry and the public regarding food and recreational safety concerns. 5%
  • Investigate and respond to industry and consumer complaints, and/or other outbreaks as assigned. 10%
  • Completion of work planning, administrative communication and on-going professional development. Salary Information This classification of this position is Environmental Health Sanitarian
  • Entry which is in schedule/ range 15-04. Starting pay will be $31.00

50 per hour, commensurate with experience. For current and eligible former State employees, compensation will be set in accordance with the State Compensation Plan effective at the time of hire. Job Details At DATCP, we strive to deliver efficient and effective programs and services to Wisconsin agriculture, consumers, and businesses. The Department has numerous on-the-job training (OJT) opportunities, unique to each Bureau. The OJT opportunities for this position include advanced training in tourist rooming house inspections and compliance procedures, job shadowing, internal meetings, and code review. Additionally, some transferable skills, utilized in this position, include inspection methods, conflict management, stakeholder engagement, and active listening.
Conditions of Employment:
DATCP does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the selected applicant being able to provide documentation of eligibility to work in the United States. A criminal background check will be performed on the selected applicant prior to an offer of employment. Applicant must be a resident of Wisconsin (18 years of age or older). Limited term positions are not civil service classified positions, do not have rights to permanent civil service classified positions, and do not lead to permanent status. This position is Limited Term Employment (LTE) and is limited to 1,039 hours in 26 consecutive pay periods (1 year) Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to provide one's own transportation for work purposes, is required. Travel is required for approximately 90% of this position's duties. Qualifications Minimally qualified candidates will have the following: The REHS/RS credential and application eligibility at the time of hire: Bachelor's degree or higher in Environmental Health from a college accredited in the United States; or Bachelor's degree or higher accredited in the United States (with 30 semester hours of college credit in basic Science coursework; college credit in Math or Statistics); and Two or more years of work experience in the field of environmental health; or Associate degree with 5+ years of work experience in the field of environmental health or Possession of a valid Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian (RS) or NEHA REHS/Registered Sanitarian (RS) certification For additional information on eligibility requirements see the links below: EHAC-Accredited Environmental Health Bachelor's Degree Programs EHAC-Accredited Environmental Health Master's Degree or PhD Wisconsin RS Eligibility Requirements
