ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responsible for the investigation of fires and the enforcement of fire codes.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Investigates all fires to determine origin. Inspects business establishments, public meeting places, restaurants, day care centers, and stores for fire code violations, directs enforcement actions and carries out all other inspections and duties as are required by the State Statutes. Examines building plans and specifications for conformance with fire codes. Checks materials and substances used in building construction and decoration for flammability. Investigates all fire alarm incidents. Inspects vehicles transporting flammable materials. Inspects all flammable liquid installations for compliance with regulations. Inspects blasting areas and issues blasting permits. Compiles information and reports to Town and State officials. Lectures on fire prevention. Determines fire lanes and hydrant locations. Consults with Town and State officials on matters of fire origins and fire codes. Works closely with Town Building Official on inspections and code enforcement program. Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of fire and safety code inspection practices. Considerable knowledge of modern firefighting equipment and methods of fire department hydraulics, fire suppression techniques, fire protection and fire prevention methods, and other emergency and life saving techniques. Considerable knowledge of Fire Code, State and local ordinances and regulations with respect to fire safety and fire prevention. Good knowledge of fire causes. Good ability to read and interpret regulations and building plans. Good ability to communicate orally and in writing. Good ability to enforce regulations with firmness and tact. Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town and State officials and with the general public. Ability to direct large-scale operations of personnel and equipment under emergency conditions. Must be a State of Connecticut Certified Fire Marshal under the provisions of Section 29-45a of the Connecticut General Statutes. High school degree plus three years of experience as a Fire Marshal or in a related field; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.

License or Certificate:

Must have a valid Connecticut driver's license.

Supervised By:

Works under the general direction of the Town Manager and for technical and policy matters under the direction of the Board of Fire Commissioners.
