The department is comprised of 123 personnel in both operations and administration. Operations personnel are assigned to 1 of 3 shifts that work 24-hour rotations. Each shift is comprised of 36 personnel that provide 24/7/365 emergency response. The Fire Department's Administrative staff works a 40-hour week and is comprised of the Fire Chief, Assistant Chief of Operations, Assistant Chief of Support Services, Assistant Chief of Professional Standards, Administrative Logistics Coordinator, Executive Assistant, and two Training Coordinators. Additionally, the department's Risk Reduction Division is comprised of the Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal, Fire Inspector, and a Community Risk Reduction Coordinator. An employee in this class coordinates the training program for the Fire Department to include assessing and prioritizing departmental training needs, developing an annual training program for the department, maintaining employee training files, scheduling training classes, designing and delivering training, assigning instructors, procuring training materials and working with supervisors to correct knowledge and skill-based deficiencies. Work also includes responding to major incidents if needed; overseeing recruitment and assisting with the new hire process. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire, hazardous materials, and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment, and requires the employee to incorporate the necessary changes into training programs. Requires ability to work independently and to coach and teach others. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incident response work including working in inside and outside environments, working at heights, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, electrical current, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. Employees are also subject to the final OSHA standards on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed under general supervision of the assistant chief of professional standards and is evaluated through observation, discussion and review of training records and reports.A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS
Oversees the department's training program; develops and delivers training; schedules training dates; assigns instructors; gathers all materials and supplies needed to conduct the training; coordinates with other departments for outside training, sponsoring, and training; works with Battalion Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs to correct performance issues through training. Completes administrative work associated with departmental training; verifies that all training reports are entered accurately; develops training objectives and presentations; develops and tracks the training budget; coordinates and; maintains employees training files, compliance records, and certificates. Responds to major fires and other emergencies as required. Follows up on major incidents with learning critiques involving key personnel; maintains departmental after-action reviews for major incidents. Recruits firefighters by developing relationships with community leaders; makes contact and replies to persons with interest in working in the department; assists in the hiring process, oversees recruitment. Promotes safety by monitoring activities at emergency scenes and training drills; reviews injury reports for deficiencies in policies or performance; inspects equipment and facilities for hazards; provides training on safety requirements, equipment, policies and practices. Performs related duties as required.WHAT YOU'LL NEED
Associate degree (or combination of equivalent education and/or experience) from an accredited college in an emergency services, public administration field, or any field that fire chief or his/her designee approve. Eight (8) total years of fire service experience with three (3) years of fire service experience as a company officer or higher rank.
