June 24, 2026•Under general supervision, coordinates Fire Department public education programs, community activities and in-service training; provides media information as necessary; and performs related duties as assigned. This is a "mandatory-testing" position that requires Drug Testing.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Fire Public Education Officer plans, organizes, develops and implements a variety of programs to increase public awareness of fire prevention, safety and burn prevention and earthquake preparedness. Evaluates needs within the community in order to plan, develop and implement various programs relative to fire and life safety; gathers, reviews and analyzes statistical data to determine what areas of the community require an emphasis in fire prevention or other life safety instruction and education. Presents and/or coordinates programs relating to fire prevention, safety, burn prevention and earthquake preparedness for various groups and organizations such as homeowner groups, apartment owners and tenants, public and private schools, civic organizations, business and industry. Coordinates engine and truck company participation in fire and life safety presentations. Performs a variety of administrative and research assignments in response to requests from Fire management; conducts special studies of organizational policies, procedures and practices relative to state and federal mandated programs. Attends and participates in meetings, training sessions and conferences to stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the fire prevention field. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; completion of at least 15 semester units of college-level courses in fire science/technology, sociology, psychology, public education, or a closely related field; and at least one year of experience teaching in a public education or community environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Driver's License Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics (KSAO's): Modern fire prevention practices and procedures as they apply to fire and life safety in homes and businesses Municipal, state and federal laws, codes and ordinances pertaining to fire prevention and life safety measures Fire drill procedures; safety precautions and procedures in the workplace Educational methods used in fire prevention Public speaking and public relations techniques Principles and practices of sound business communication; proper English grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation Modern office practices, procedures and equipment Ability to design, organize and implement fire and life safety education programs and projects Analyze fire safety procedures in multi-family and business occupancies Interpret and explain laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures Conduct meetings and deliver training materials effectively and persuasively Use standard office equipment, including personal computers and software applications Prepare clear, concise and comprehensive correspondence, reports and training materials Work independently with a minimum of supervision or direction Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Fire department managers and staff, City officials, managers of other departments, school officials, business and homeowner association groups, the public and others encountered in the course of work
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
County-wide Employee Responsibilities:

Emergency Management Responsibilities:
During emergency conditions, the incumbent of this position will automatically be considered an emergency service worker. This employee is subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and is expected to perform emergency service duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
Positions in this class typically require: fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary.
