Fire & Life Safety Assistant Salary $17.03 - $19.54 Hourly Location City of Corvallis, OR Job Type Casual/Temporary/Seasonal Job Number 01440 Department Corvallis Fire Department Opening Date 04/13/2026 Description Benefits Position Summary Fire & Life Safety Assistants conduct hazard assessments regarding combustible vegetation and contact responsible parties; perform annual servicing of fire hydrants and assist in flow testing by third parties and in coordination with Public Works Department; assist with community risk reduction (CRR) efforts for wildland/urban interface and commercial business surveys. These tasks are illustrative only and may include other related duties. Multiple positions available Casual, non-represented position Flexible Schedule, up to 30 hours per week Seasonal position June through October Position is open until filled, first application review date will be April 27, 2026. Must meet all qualifications and requirements as listed in the Position Description . Essential Duties Provides support to the Fire Marshals in carrying out abatement of immediate fire hazards concerning combustible vegetation and CRR risk assessments and surveys.
Activities include:
site visits; analyzing and interpreting data collected through site interviews and business surveys to make determinations for needed inspection(s); personal and/or telephone contact; computer data entry; mailing notices to property owners and managers; responding to complaints; operating hand-held landscape equipment (e.g., weed-eaters, trimmers); interfacing with landscape maintenance contractors; preparing invoices to recover costs of abatement, preparing civil processes; and documenting daily activities and services for the preparation of a final statistical report for the Fire & Life Safety Assistant program. Confirms annual testing of fire hydrants through relationship with County and Public Works, maintains annual reflective hydrant markings on the Storz cap, records accurate data relating to these activities, and any hydrant flow testing performed by third parties. Surveys business occupancies, verifies addresses, gathers contact information, and validates intended use of commercial properties.
This includes:
contacting business owners/managers to gain information required for the Business Registry for Annual Fire Inspection (BRAF) forms; premise identification and clarity; and identifying need for Fire Marshal inspection. May assist with the rural addressing program, which includes addressing of residential dwellings in difficult areas, staffing all Fire Education and Prevention activities within the fire district, and assisting with fireworks education and enforcement efforts surrounding the 4 th of July holiday. Operates and drives vehicles and/or equipment safely and legally. Reads maps and uses GPS technology. Acts ethically and honestly; applies ethical standards of behavior to daily work activities and interactions. Builds confidence in the City through own actions. Delivers excellent customer service to diverse audiences. Maintains effective work relationships. Adheres to all City and Department policies. Arrives to work, meetings, and other work-related functions on time and maintains regular job attendance. Qualifications and Skills Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Three months of training and experience working with a fire department or fire related agency or program is preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to research, collect, organize, interpret, and communicate information from multiple sources (i.e., documentation, observation, interviews) to assess a facility's need for annual fire inspections and to identify opportunities for improving compliance with applicable Fire Department standards, policies, and protocols. Ability to use a computer and operate software, generate mailing lists, maintain a calendar, perform word processing, and intake of phone calls and emails. Ability to read maps and use GPS technology. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate through typed, written and oral means. Ability to get along well with coworkers, other agencies and the public and maintain effective work relationships. Excellent conflict resolution/public relations skills. Special Requirements Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid Oregon Drivers License. This position may work on weekends and/or holidays as needed.
