Job Description

This position is responsible for completing required training to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of a Firefighter. This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Barrow County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace.
MAJOR DUTIES
Participates in training to obtain the necessary skills, knowledge, and certification to advance to the Firefighter level within the Emergency Services department. Completes classroom work; completes required quizzes and tests at a satisfactory level. Participates in daily physical fitness and agility activities. Participates in live burns, forcible entries, hazardous materials responses, and other training exercises. Performs general housekeeping and grounds and maintenance work associated with the maintenance of the training center and the administrative facilities. Performs related duties.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of department policies and procedures. Knowledge of current and accepted firefighting practices. Knowledge of Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council compliance standards. Knowledge of departmental and county policies and procedures and related federal, state, and local guidelines. Knowledge of county streets and geography. Knowledge of computers and job related software programs. Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions. Skill in the preparation of clear and precise reports. Skill in oral and written communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
