Job Description

Overview The Giles County Government is seeking a dedicated Judicial Commissioner to support the judicial process and ensure efficient court operations. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to the legal system by performing administrative and clerical duties, assisting with research, and supporting judicial activities. Candidate must live in Giles County and it is preferred the candidate not live further than 30 minutes away from the Giles County Sheriff's Department (200 Thomas Gatlin Dr. Pulaski, TN)
Duties Key Responsibilities & Functions:
Warrant Issuance:
Determines probable cause to issue search warrants, arrest warrants, and criminal summonses for law enforcement.
Bail & Release:
Sets bail, approves bonds, and releases defendants on their own recognizance (recognizance bonds).
Emergency Orders:
Issues temporary orders of protection (injunctions) in domestic violence cases.
Liaison:
Serves as a link between judges, police, inmates, and the public.
Arraignments:
Conducts initial court appearances, sets conditions of release, and assigns court dates.
Case Management:
Files and processes court orders, motions, and civil warrants. Overview Giles County Government is seeking a Part-Time Magistrate to serve in a judicial capacity within the local legal system. The ideal candidate will provide legal guidance, conduct research, and assist in the administration of justice. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to community service while utilizing strong legal expertise and communication skills. for detailed description of job requirements dated May 1, 2024. Preside over minor criminal cases, civil matters, and preliminary hearings in accordance with local laws and regulations. Conduct legal research using resources such as LexisNexis and Westlaw to support case decisions and ensure compliance with current statutes. Draft legal documents, including warrants, orders, and other judicial paperwork with clarity and precision. Provide general counsel on legal issues pertinent to county operations and community concerns. Maintain accurate records of proceedings and ensure proper documentation of case files. Communicate effectively with attorneys, law enforcement, court staff, and the public regarding case status and procedural requirements. Assist in the development of policies or procedures related to court operations as needed. Experience Prior experience in litigation, legal research, or judicial proceedings is highly desirable. Strong proficiency with legal research tools such as LexisNexis and Westlaw. Demonstrated ability to interpret laws, regulations, and legal precedents accurately. Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—are essential for effective courtroom management and documentation. Proven skills in legal drafting, including writing clear and concise legal opinions or orders. Experience working within a government or judicial environment is preferred but not required.
