Job Summary:
Provides support and coaching to student participants in the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center's Advocacy Programs. The Advocacy Programs include the Law Center's moot court, trial advocacy, and alternative dispute resolution external competition teams as well as the Law Center's internal advocacy competitions and voluntary skills development workshops. This position is responsible for the administration and continued development of a robust set of student advocacy skills development opportunities. Competition Administration and Management = 45% Supports and assists the Program Director with competition registration and team travel arrangements for the Law Center's external moot court, ADR, and mock trial competitions. Supervises student Board of Advocates. Assists in the recruitment and training of Advocacy Program coaches and guest judges. Facilitates student travel arrangements and reimbursements with the Law Center's Business Office as needed. Advocacy Skills Training and Coaching = 45% Provides one-on-one case preparation assistance to Advocacy Program internal and external competition participants, and acts as primary liaison between external competition team members, the Board of Advocates, and the Advocacy Programs Director. Case preparation activities may include development of theories of the case; review of written briefs, witness examination scripts, and draft opening statements and summations; development and production of courtroom visual aids; and creation of trial notebooks. Plans and implements, under the supervision of the Program Director, voluntary skills training opportunities and events for participants in the Law Center's Advocacy Programs. Examples of possible opportunities include weekend skills boot camps, lunchtime workshop series, and similar events. Creates, under the supervision of the Program Director, at least one full moot court, mock trial, or alternative dispute resolution case file for use in the Law Center's internal advocacy competitions and for eventual publication. Acts as a secondary coach where needed for the Law Center's moot court, mock trial, and/or ADR external competition teams. Other Related Duties as Assigned = 10%
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree plus two years related experience or a master's degree. LSU values skills, experience, and expertise. Candidates who have relevant experience in key job responsibilities are encouraged to apply-a degree is not required as long as the candidate meets the required years of experience specified in the job description.
Preferred Qualifications :
Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school or equivalent law degree. Experience as a competitor or coach in the Law Center's Advocacy Programs or a similar advocacy skills competition program.

Some evening and weekend work required. Ability to travel in state and out of state, both weekdays and weekends, approximately 5 trips annually with overnight stay. This is a full-time position. The term of appointment for the Advocacy Fellow is one year. In exceptional circumstances, a Fellow may receive reappointment for a second year.
