Job Description

Performs advanced clerical, administrative, and legal support work for the Justice of the Peace Court. Responsibilities include creating, processing, maintaining, and managing case files; preparing legal documents; maintaining court records; processing court proceedings and dispositions; and providing assistance to attorneys, law enforcement agencies, court personnel, and the public. Work requires knowledge of court procedures, records management, and applicable laws, policies, and regulations. Creates and maintains case files. Prepares court docket; retrieves, organizes, and prepares case files prior to hearings. Computes court costs, fees, and fines. May attend court proceedings. Performs electronic filing (e-filing) and reviews filings for completeness and accuracy. Ensures legal documentation is accurate and corrects errors when necessary. Researches information on case files, collections, judgments and status of cases as requested. Reports case dispositions and actions to appropriate agencies. Gathers, creates and scans, information on new cases and orders, prints out judgments and sentence, files, motions and orders. Reviews and oversees proper records management of all documents. May communicate with other law enforcement agencies or partnering entities on behalf of the Justice of the Peace. Secures authorized signatures on legal documents and delivers documents to the appropriate party or departments. Responds to requests in person, by mail, and by telephone in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive and protected information. Performs other related duties as assigned. Graduation from high school. Two (2) years of progressively responsible clerical, court, legal, or administrative experience, preferably in a court or legal environment.
Certificates, Licenses and Registration:
Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license. Must be able to be insured by the County's insurance carrier.

Bilingual (Spanish and English) with the ability to converse fluently in both languages. Knowledge of court procedures, legal terminology, records management practices, and applicable laws and regulations. Knowledge of civil, criminal, probate, family, and magistrate court processes. Ability to understand and process legal documents accurately and efficiently. Ability to maintain accurate records and perform detailed data entry. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to interact professionally with the public, attorneys, judges, law enforcement agencies, and County personnel. Bilingual (Spanish and English) with the ability to converse fluently in both languages. Skill in operating standard office equipment and computer software applications.
