St. Louis Lambert International Airport (Employees assigned to St. Louis Lambert International Airport may be eligible for a commuting allowance of $180.00 bi-weekly.) Promotional - Open to Permanent City Employees Only. The Airport Police Department Sergeant supervises subordinate Airport Police Officers and may also supervise support staff and/or clerical staff. Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Provides first-line supervision of Airport Police Officers in the performance of their duties towards the protection of life and property. The Sergeant shall be responsible for the actions of the police officers under their supervision. This position is charged with the constant vigilance over the officers assigned to them and over persons, places and conditions within their jurisdiction. They are held to a strict accountability for all happenings against peace, good order and the law. Supervises uniformed and civilian staff for a shift or section ensuring useful and successful handling of workload including work assignment balance, reviewing reports, preparing the necessary daily records and writes complete, concise and coherent reports for a variety of purposes and evaluates reports for continued investigations. May direct the work of a specialized unit - e.g. canine team, UCR (Uniform Criminal Reporting), CID (Criminal Investigation Division), and/or patrol operations. May:
Attend and/or conduct briefings and debriefings in the absence of the Patrol Watch Commander when necessary and represent the Watch Commander in his absence; Supervise investigations of criminal activity or internal investigations in, but not limited to, use of force, deaths, accidents, employee conduct both on and off duty, and on-the-job injuries; ensure reports are completed in a timely manner; Supervise surveillance activities, search and rescue efforts, and tactical operations, including coordinating police actions with other agencies and with other units of the Department; and Supervise personnel, equipment, and resources to effectively handle Canine Division activities including training, evaluations, searches, documentation/record keeping. Relays and implements policies and procedures applicable to section duties and responsibilities. Supervises the performance and competency of subordinates and completes annual performance/service rating forms, providing positive and constructive feedback when appropriate; counseling employees when necessary; investigates and recommends disciplinary action when appropriate. Develops procedures, methods and controls necessary to assure the protection and safe-guarding of passengers, air crews, ground personnel and the traveling public against acts of unlawful interference as outlined in the Airport Security Program. Is familiar with every crime committed in their area of responsibility and assigns a commissioned officer to make and complete the criminal investigation of all major crimes and minor crimes where an investigation is required. Maintains files, records, photographs and pertinent data as required. Exchanges police information with other police and governmental investigative agencies for a better understanding and awareness of criminal activities. Enforces or directs the enforcement of Federal, State and St. Louis County laws and ordinances, Department policies, General/Special Orders, and standards of conduct. Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, tune and synchronize, and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as personal computer, video camera, word processing, spreadsheet and police reporting software, motor vehicle, two-way radio, firearm, and/or related materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as training records, FAA incident forms, progress evaluations (canine), UCR reports, budget sheets, city personnel and department police manuals, ordinance and code books and non-routine correspondence. Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals. Functional Reasoning:
Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems such as supervision, managing, leading, teaching, directing, planning, coordinating and controlling. Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, odors, wetness, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic/poisonous agents, violence or disease. Physical Requirements:
Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds, such as removing explosives or controlling a suspect. Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, in order to perform patrol duties. Sensory Requirements:
Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks, such as listening for sirens, smelling gas leaks and using texture to identify fingerprints. Other Requirements:
Must be available to work varying shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime. A ten year background investigation will be conducted in accordance with FAA regulations for positions at St. Louis Lambert International Airport. Qualifications A high school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate; plus five years of experience as an Airport Police Officer by the time of application. Certification :
Must be certified as a Police Officer by the State of Missouri. Deputization :
Must be deputized as a Police Officer by St. Louis County, Missouri. License:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis.
