Job Summary The Deputy Sheriff patrols and investigates activities, traffic control, crowd control, and public relations, witness interviewing, evidence collection and management, basic crime prevention methods, weapon and equipment operation and maintenance, report preparation, and other routine law enforcement duties. Other duties must be performed as assigned by the Sergeants, Patrol/Investigations Captain, Chief Deputy Sheriff and/or the Sheriff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIESMaintains order, responds to emergencies, protects people and property, and enforces motor vehicle and criminal law and County ordinancesArrests perpetrator of criminal act or submits citation or warning to violator of motor vehicle or County ordinanceMonitors traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving proceduresDirects traffic flow and reroutes traffic in case of emergenciesReviews facts to determine if criminal act or statute violation is involvedEvaluates complaint and emergency-request information to determine response requirementsInvestigates traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if crime has been committed or Motor vehicle laws are violatedProvides road information to assist motorists; relays complaint and emergency-request information to appropriate agency communication centerMaintains vehicle and equipment.

Informs supervisor if repair is neededCautions, evicts, or apprehends violators of laws and regulationsCompletes reports and required documentation per department policy in an accurate and timely mannerMaintains up-to-date job knowledge, certifications, licenses and registrations.

Keeps up to date on laws, rules and regulations.

Recommends policy/procedure changes to supervisor
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Associate's Degree or a minimum of 60 college credits in police science or related fieldCERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSPossess and maintain valid Wisconsin Driver's License that will allow unrestricted performance of Deputy Sheriff dutiesValid Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer certification or be certifiable upon hire
