DESCRIPTION
The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT ) Team is currently accepting applications from sworn officers for the position of Tactical Operator. The purpose of this opening is to establish an eligibility list for anticipated and future vacancies. Responsibilities associated with this assignment include, but are not limited to, providing tactical support to other police units and responding to high-risk incidents requiring specialized tactics and equipment. New team members may be assigned a specialty role based on the operational needs of the team and the operator's interests. Officers interested in this position must have a minimum of two years of experience as a sworn officer. Lateral officers must have at least two years of law enforcement experience and may not be in a probationary status prior to the close of the application period. In addition, applicants must have successfully completed the 40-hour Patrol Carbine Course (or equivalent) and the handgun optic transition course prior to SWAT testing. Applicants must demonstrate strong teamwork and decision-making abilities, maintain a high level of physical fitness, and possess proficiency with firearms. SWAT officers are required to be available for callouts and will receive on-call compensation upon successful completion of the evaluation period. Officers will be required to attending monthly trainings that can vary on a month-to-month basis. This assignment includes a 5% specialty pay incentive upon completion of the entire evaluation period, which may take up to one year. The testing process will include, but is not limited to, a physical fitness assessment, firearms qualification, multiple shooting courses, judgmental shooting scenarios, and an oral board. Certain portions of the testing process will require a passing score. Upon completion of the testing process, an eligibility list will be established for applicants who may be selected to begin the evaluation period. Specialty assignment applications, résumés, and the previous three months of check-ins will be reviewed. If testing occurs outside an employee's normal work hours, employees may coordinate with their immediate supervisor to flex time in order to attend interviews and testing. Overtime or compensatory time must be pre-approved and will only be authorized under exceptional circumstances. All applications and résumés must be submitted no later than 2359 hours on June 26, 2026. Testing is anticipated to occur on July 9 and July 10, 2026. For lateral officers, proper documentation will be required to show successful completion of an equivalent 40-hour Patrol Carbine Course. Documentation must also demonstrate continuous training and qualifications with the carbine. Whether an equivalent course meets the standards of the Chandler Police Department Patrol Carbine Course will be determined at the discretion of the SWAT Commander. All required documentation must be presented prior to the SWAT test.
