Job Description

Culver City is a Charter City incorporated in 1917, and is a destination filled with outdoor cafes, unique shops and galleries opening onto pedestrian-friendly boulevards. Culver City has a dedicated staff of approximately 800+employees with an over all operating budget of over 368 million. The City provides a full range of municipal services including its own Fire, Police, Community Development, Public Works, Parks, Recreation, Community Services, and Transportation system.

  • The following tasks are essential for this position. Incumbents in this classification may not perform all of these tasks, or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
  • Patrols City parks, open spaces, recreational facilities, and surrounding areas by foot and vehicle.
  • Monitors activities within parks and observes, documents, and reports suspicious, anti-social, unlawful, or unsafe behavior.
  • Responds to public inquiries and provides information and assistance to park visitors.
  • Protects municipal property and facilities from damage, vandalism, theft, and misuse.
  • Reports incidents requiring law enforcement intervention and coordinates with the Police Department when necessary.
  • Receives and transmits information using two-way radio communication equipment.
  • Handles confrontational situations in accordance with departmental policies and procedures while maintaining public safety.
  • Issues parking citations and municipal code violation notices.
  • May make private person's arrests when authorized and may be required to testify in court regarding incidents and enforcement actions.
  • Maintains detailed logs, incident reports, and other records that are accurate, complete, and timely.
  • Carries and properly utilizes authorized defensive equipment, including a police baton and pepper spray, in accordance with established policies.
  • Assists police personnel and other City departments when requested.
  • Ensures compliance with City ordinances, regulations, and park rules.
  • Performs a variety of public service and community relations activities.
  • Assists with special events, public outreach programs, and other assignments as directed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Training and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
A typical qualifying background includes:
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED equivalent. College coursework in Criminal Justice, Behavioral Sciences, Public Administration, or a related field is desirable. Experience involving public contact, customer service, security, patrol, code enforcement, or related work is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license. The most qualified candidates will be invited to advance to the next stage of the recruitment process, which consists of written examination and oral appraisal interview. Applicants must receive a passing score on all examination components for placement on the eligible list. Written Examination (weighted at 50%): Written Exercise to measure job knowledge, decision making skills, verbal and written communication skills. (Tentatively scheduled for the week of TBD). Oral Appraisal Interview (weighted at 50%): Evaluates training, experience and personal qualifications. (Tentatively scheduled for the week of TBD).
Selection Process:
The selection process will include the following to determine suitability for the position: Selection Interview with the Housing Department, Background and Reference check, including Live Scan fingerprinting, Medical Examination; candidates must pass a pre-placement medical examination, which will include a drug screen. A positive pre-placement drug test, refusal or failure to test may result in rejection of the candidate. Background/ Reference Check:
Upon a conditional job offer, a live scan finger printing must be completed with acceptable results. Your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with the City. If you are selected as a finalist, you will be contacted to schedule a fingerprinting appointment. Upon hire, employee is subject to further reporting from DOJ via subsequent arrest notification. Pre-placement medical evaluation including drug screen (select positions).
