JOB SUMMARY
Works under the general direction of a supervisor and works independently as required; protects life and property and enforces laws and ordinances. Must be able to exercise independent judgment. Does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs related duties as required. Patrols a specified area; investigates suspicious activities; conducts criminal and motor vehicle investigations. Makes arrests for violations of laws or ordinances, escorts prisoners to Police Headquarters, searches prisoners, prepares required paperwork, and testifies in court and other hearings as directed. Acts positively with members of the community and assists them with solving public safety and community problems and improving the quality of life. Enforces traffic laws, directs traffic and provides information concerning the location of City streets, routes and buildings. Instructs in Police Academy, as assigned.

Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Ability to observe, analyze and react to situations objectively and to record them in a clear, concise and timely manner. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies. Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely - orally and in writing. ?Ability to handle situations firmly, fairly, courteously and tactfully. Ability to develop skill in the care and use of departmental equipment. Sufficient strength, agility and endurance to perform the duties of the class. Ability to work effectively and positively with a diverse population. Ability to work toward solving problems affecting the quality of life in the community. Ability to behave in a positive and fair manner in order to gain and maintain the confidence, support, cooperation and satisfaction of the community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED; of good moral character and reputation, and must meet age requirement of at least twenty-one (21) years of age. No felony, domestic violence, A misdemeanor or B misdemeanor criminal convictions.
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION
Step One Determine whether you meet the department's minimum qualifications. Step Two Obtain a valid Complete Health and Injury Prevention (CHIP) Card by registering to take the Physical Ability Assessment online at https://www.certifyfit.com/test-schedule. Assessments may also be scheduled by call (203) 235-5865. The current fee for taking the assessment is $115. Step Three Apply and take the CPCA exam online at https://www.policeapp.com/Police-Associations/CPCA-Consortium/. The current fee is $95. Candidates who have taken the CPCA and obtained a passing score of 70% or better within the past six months will be considered. Step Four An eligibility list is established of all candidates who have passed the agility and written examination. List is valid for one year or until it is exhausted; whichever comes first.
