00 per hour Position Summary The Village of Erie Police Department is actively seeking qualified, motivated candidates for the position of Police Officer. This critical role involves performing law enforcement duties to protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, prevent and investigate crimes, and maintain public peace and order within the Village of Erie and surrounding response areas. Special Note for Lateral Candidates The Village of Erie Police Department strongly encourages applications from experienced, currently certified Police Officers (Lateral Candidates). Lateral applicants with active certification from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB) or an equivalent state agency, who meet all other minimum qualifications, will be given priority consideration and may be eligible for an expedited hiring process and a competitive starting salary commensurate with experience and training. Essential Duties and Responsibilities A Police Officer with the Village of Erie is responsible for a comprehensive range of law enforcement and community service duties, including:
Proactive Patrol:
Patrols assigned areas in uniform and unmarked vehicles to actively prevent and detect criminal activity.
Emergency Response:
Responds promptly to calls for service, emergencies, and critical incidents, providing assistance and taking appropriate action.
Criminal Investigation:
Conducts thorough preliminary and follow-up investigations, collects and processes evidence, interviews witnesses and suspects, and prepares detailed, accurate reports.
Law Enforcement:
Enforces state laws, local ordinances, and traffic regulations through fair and impartial application.
Judicial Process:
Makes lawful arrests, issues citations and warnings, and prepares case files for prosecution. Testifies accurately and professionally in court proceedings, including traffic, civil, and criminal cases.
Community Engagement:
Actively assists in community policing initiatives, public relations activities, and crime prevention programs to foster positive relationships with residents and businesses.
Maintenance & Readiness:
Maintains assigned equipment, firearms, and departmental vehicles in optimal working condition. Ensures continuous personal readiness.
Training & Compliance:
Completes all required mandatory training, certifications, and proficiency checks as mandated by ILETSB and the Village of Erie Police Department.
General Duties:
Performs other duties and special assignments as directed by supervisory staff. Minimum Qualifications All candidates, including laterals, must meet the following minimum requirements:
Citizenship:
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Age:
Minimum age of 21 years at the time of appointment.
Education:
Minimum of a High school diploma. An associate's degree or higher is preferred.
License:
Possession of a valid Illinois Driver's License (Class D).
Criminal History:
No felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions as defined by ILETSB and state law. A thorough background check will be performed on any candidate; in addition, candidates must demonstrate a high standard of social, moral, and financial responsibility in adherence with the EPD Mission, Vision, and Values.
Certification:
Ability to obtain and maintain certification through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB).
Physical & Mental Fitness:
Must pass a comprehensive background investigation, medical evaluation, drug screening, and psychological assessment.

Availability:
Must be willing and able to work various shifts, weekends, and holidays in a 24/7 operation. Preferred Qualifications Candidates possessing the following will be viewed favorably:
Experience:
Prior law enforcement, military, or security experience.
Education:
An associate's or bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field.
Local Knowledge:
Comprehensive knowledge of local geography, ordinances, and the Village of Erie community.
Specialized Training:
Current or prior certification in or experience with EMS/FD or specialized crisis intervention training (CIT).
