Job Description

SUMMARY:
Serves as a Police Officer/Patrol in the Law Enforcement Department. Must be
POST CERTIFIED. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Must maintain the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism with the department. Responsible for enforcing codes and ordinances of the Coushatta Tribe as well as work with state and federal law enforcement agencies when necessary especially affecting jurisdiction, major crimes, and other issues that require continued updates on laws affecting tribal government. Follow all policies and procedures for the department including such areas, but not limited to: uniform codes, use of force, pursuit driving, specialized training and public relations. Maintain law and order on lands and properties of the Coushatta Tribe. Serves the department and community on a 24-hour rotation basis and you will be required to work conditions that will involve shift and weekend schedules. Candidates selected for permanent assignment must be available to work 365 days out of the year, including holidays. Must undergo standard drug testing, background investigations. Assist the Allen Parish Sheriff's Department on a needed basis through cross-deputization. There will be a possibility for working late to supervise programs or complete projects You will be required to fulfill any other duties as assigned by the Tribal Council. You must maintain a level of professionalism both on and off duty. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
No criminal history and be able to pass an extensive background investigation. Candidates selected will be required to attend and satisfactorily complete an accredited law enforcement-training program prior to assignment as permanent personnel, unless presently post certified. Must be able to complete a background investigation which includes a 10 year criminal and a 10 year civil search which is required in order to become adjudicated by BIA standards. Be physically able to meet fit for duty expectations; which includes push-ups, sit-ups, and a 300 meter run. To perform this job successfully; an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • 1 year documented patrolman experience recommended.
SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Must be a fast learner and must be able to work independently. Must be able to read and interpret documents. Must be able to write routine reports and correspondence, and be able to calculate figures. Must have basic computer skills. Must be able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables. Must be able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events. Must be able to collect and research data, demonstrate attention to details, accuracy and thoroughness, and complete work in a timely manner. Must be organized.
  • Must be able to be consistently at work and on time. Might be required to work late to complete a project. Must have a current driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Must be able to pass firearm qualifications bi-annually.
  • Must be able to pass Taser Qualifications and Defensive Tactics annually.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is also regularly required to stand; walk; sit; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, and to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will frequently lift, move or carry up to fifty (50) pounds. Occasionally the employee may be required to list, move or carry more than one hundred (100) pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the functions of this job. Fulfill a 90-day probation period through FTO (Field Training Officer). The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. In some instances, the noise level increases to loud. The employee may be subjected to tobacco smoke and/or bright flashing lights.
