Job Description
The Town of West Newbury seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, non-civil service Massachusetts Certified Police Officer. Applicants must possess, or have the ability to obtain, a driver's license, a Massachusetts license to carry firearms, and POST certification. Previous full-time MPTC Academy certification is strongly preferred, but not required upon applying. Non-full-time certified and Bridge Academy certified applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be a minimum of 21 years old, a United States citizen, reside within 30 miles of West Newbury after hiring, and successfully pass a background check, medical exam, psychological exam, and other MPTC required testing (including physical test). High school diploma, or equivalent, is required. Benefits eligible position with clothing allowance and education/military incentives. FY contractual rate of $33.08 per hour effective July 1, 2026. A Patrol Officer shall be responsible for the efficient performance of required duties in conformance with the rules, regulations and policies contained in the Department Rules and Regulations. 1) Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, where appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings. 2) Reduce the opportunities for the commission of crime through preventive patrol and other measures. 3) Aid individuals who are in danger of physical harm. 4) Facilitate the movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. 5) Identify problems that are potentially serious law enforcement or governmental problems. 6) Create and maintain a feeling of security within the community. 7) Promote and preserve the peace. 8) Provide other services on an emergency basis. 9) Ability to work a variety of shifts to include nights, weekends, holidays, etc.
