Job Description

Summary of Work The School Resource Officer supports and facilitates the educational process within the MSAD #51 public school system by working to ensure a safe and secure environment through the foundation and maintenance of meaningful relationships with students, faculty, staff and parents. The SRO will proactively interact with the school community to enforce laws and ordinances, to maintain preservation of public order, protection of life, and the prevention, detection and investigation of crime. The SRO will work effectively with students, parents, school personnel and community agencies to support teaching and learning in the schools. The SRO will patrol MSAD #51 property to protect students, staff and visitors from physical harm and prevent loss to district property from criminal activity. Starting base pay $36.37 - $41.18/hr. Patrols district property for suspicious activity, unauthorized persons on campus, or unauthorized entry. Responds to and manages situations involving mental health crises. Provides in-service training to help administrators be better prepared to deal with security - related matters and serve as a team member to support student success. Works closely with the principals and staff of the schools to foster a better understanding of the law enforcement function to maintain a secure learning environment. Proactively works with the school leadership teams and collaborates with district administrative team on safety protocols and procedures. Serves as a visible and active law enforcement officer on campus, dealing with law-related issues, including but not limited to drugs, traffic offenses, trespassing, assault, and property crimes. Conducts routine patrols of assigned facilities to include buildings, parking lots, and district-owned, leased or rented property. Maintains a working relationship with state agencies dealing with youth, i.e., Department of Health and Human Services and Maine Department of Corrections. Reviews all reports involving juveniles submitted by other officers, follows-up on those cases as assigned and makes notification to school officials as appropriate. Develops and delivers age-appropriate safety programs to Mabel I. Wilson Elementary School, Greely Middle School, and Greely High School. Prepares and delivers presentations at faculty meetings, parent education events, parent groups, student groups, and community organization meetings. Develops and participates in community policing programs for students. Develops and maintains a high level of knowledge concerning drug use and current trends, popular social media platforms, and apps. Maintains appropriate confidentiality consistent with federal and state laws and MSAD 51 policies regarding student information. Maintains appropriate confidentiality related to investigations and juvenile issues within the Police Department. Establishes and maintains appropriate boundaries while positively interacting with youth, parents, faculty and staff. Must successfully complete all statutorily mandated training and other training as assigned. Discharges the duties and responsibilities of the SRO as defined in the School Resource Officer Memorandum of Understanding between MSAD 51 and the Town of Cumberland Police Department. Performs other work as required. Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities) Must meet all the minimum requirements of a Patrol Officer. High School diploma, GED, or equivalent training and experience. Graduate of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a full-time law enforcement officer.
