Job Description

The Augusta Police Department is seeking dedicated, community-focused individuals to join our team as full-time Patrol Officers. In this role, you will perform a wide range of law enforcement duties, including patrol operations, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, emergency response, and community policing initiatives that help keep Maine's capital city safe. Patrol Officers serve throughout the city by maintaining a visible presence in neighborhoods, parks, business districts, and on city streets to preserve the peace, enforce federal, state, and local laws, and protect the lives and property of residents and visitors. Responsibilities include responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, investigating criminal activity and motor vehicle crashes, interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects, collecting and preserving evidence, making arrests, preparing detailed reports, testifying in court, and providing first aid when needed. Officers also engage in proactive crime prevention efforts, traffic safety enforcement, and community outreach while working closely with fellow officers, other agencies, and community members to build trust and enhance public safety. This position requires sound judgment, strong communication and problem-solving skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, excellent physical fitness, and a commitment to ethical law enforcement and public service. Requirements Applicants must be at least 21 years of age unless they have earned an associate degree or completed at least 60 credit hours of post-secondary education, in which case they must be at least 20 years of age. A valid Maine driver's license, or the ability to obtain one by the time of hire, is required, along with a clean driving record. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States, possess good moral character, and be able to meet all Maine Criminal Justice Academy (MCJA) employment standards and physical fitness requirements. Completion of the MCJA 200-hour Pre-Service Training Program is preferred; applicants who have not yet completed the program must be eligible to do so within the timeframe required by the position. Selected candidates must successfully complete the MCJA physical fitness assessment, oral interview, comprehensive background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, medical examination, Chief's interview, and all other pre-employment requirements. Compensation & Benefits This position is covered by the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) collective bargaining agreement. The base pay range is $32.39 to $41.83 per hour. Prior police service may be credited toward starting pay and vacation accrual. Additional 2.5%, 5%, or 6% hourly stipend for qualifying military service or job-related degrees. Annual COLA and scheduled step increases. Comprehensive benefits package, including dental, vision, and a choice of three health insurance plans. Employees enrolled in the Pemaquid Plan receive an employer-funded HRA to help offset deductible costs and a $350 annual contribution toward a Medical FSA. Medical buyout of $3,000-$3,600 annually for eligible employees with qualifying alternative health coverage. Retirement benefits include mandatory enrollment in the MainePERS Special Plan 3C, a 25-year, no-age defined benefit pension plan. Employees enrolled in this plan do not contribute to Social Security. Additional benefits include 2-5 weeks of paid vacation leave, monthly sick leave accrual, 110 hours of holiday PTO annually, one floating holiday, holiday premium pay for 12 holidays, employer-paid basic life insurance, access to supplemental life insurance and short-term disability coverage, an optional 457(b) deferred compensation plan, tuition reimbursement, and more.
