Job Description

This position of Detroit Police Personal Protection Order Advocate works under the supervision of the Victim Assistance Program Senior Social Worker, and is primarily responsible for providing direct services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault within the Detroit Police Department. Skills and abilities associated with the provision of customer services; independent and team functioning and ability to communicate with all levels of management is required. Independent travel is required with this position and the hours per day and week are eight (8) and forty (40) respectively. Employees, in this position must maintain a Detroit Police Department Driver's License, and will be driving a Detroit Police Victim Assistance Program vehicle. Employees, in this position, have no supervisory responsibilities. Employees, in this title work in conjunction with the Detroit Police Department Victim Assistance Program, Detroit Police Department Special Victims Unit, and other relevant Detroit Police Department locations. The specific duties associated with this position are as follows: Conduct interviews with victims in order to complete all required court forms and provide directives on their rights and responsibilities when applying for a Personal Protection Order. Assist in transportation of victims, as needed. Informing a victim of the availability of, and assisting the victim in obtaining, serving, modifying, or rescinding, a personal protection order. Informing a victim of the availability of shelter, safety plans, counseling, other social services, and generic written materials about Michigan law. Complete all related case documentation. Complete monthly stats, timely. Perform other related duties, as assigned. The desired candidate must possess one (1) year or more of experience in the area of the applied position. and
CANDIDATE MUST HAVE EXPERIENCE WORKING DIRECTLY WITH VICTIMS.
The skills, knowledge and minimum qualifications required for this position, are skills commensurate with the competition of a high school education. The Desired candidate must possess a Valid Michigan Driver's License and maintain a driving recorded that is in accordance to the Detroit Police Department standards to operate Department Vehicles prior to and throughout employment with the Detroit Police Department.

Employees in this position must maintain a Detroit Police Department Driver's License, due to the requirement of driving a Detroit Police Victim Assistance Program Vehicle. All Detroit Police Victim Advocates are 100% contractual and exempt from all union affiliations. Employees, in this position are employed under the Detroit Police Department Victim Assistance, but are funded under the FY 2023 Supplemental Family Violence Prevention and Services Act Grant.
Special Note:
This is an at-will appointment, and the candidate selected serves at the pleasure of the Chief of Police. This is a grant funded position, and may be eliminated when the funding ends. Candidates will be required to undergo a full criminal background check prior to execution of contractual agreement or hiring.
