POLICE TRAINEE

As a Police Officer Trainee, you will be compensated to attend a Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) academy and perform miscellaneous duties to include clerical and other tasks as needed. This is an in-training position for individuals that have not completed training and academic requirements established by the North Carolina Department of Justice Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards to become a fully certified Police Officer. A Police Officer Trainee will perform applicable duties associated with training guidelines set by the North Carolina Department of Justice Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards' Basic Law Enforcement Training Program (B.L.E.T.). This is a temporary position. The Police Officer Trainee must complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training program and pass the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards state examination for police officers before becoming full-time with the City of Kinston Police Department. Some knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; ability to learn police procedures and law enforcement techniques; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to prepare clear and comprehensive reports; ability to effectively perform work in stressful situations; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of an automobile; ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with associates and the general public. Must possess a high school diploma/G.E.D. Must be a citizen of the United States. Must be 20 years of age by end of Basic Law Enforcement Training classes. Must have a minimum knowledge of police laws and enforcement. Must possess good written and oral communication skills. Must possess good general math skills. Basic Law Enforcement Certification:

Must be a citizen of the United States. Must be at least 20 years of age. Must give written consent to a thorough background investigation. Must give written consent for fingerprinting and have a search made by this agency of: local, state, and national records to disclose any past criminal history. Must be examined and certified by a physician to meet physical requirements of a Law Enforcement Officer. Must consent to a drug screen meeting the requirements of Federal Workplace Drug Testing Programs with negative results. Must consent to a psychological examination and be determined to properly fulfill the requirements of a Law Enforcement Officer's mental and emotional suitability. Must meet the requirements of firearms training as prescribed for Law Enforcement.
