Under general supervision, Police Officers perform law enforcement and public safety duties involving the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, and preservation of public order. Officers are expected to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, integrity, and accountability while serving the community. Police Officers respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, conduct investigations, enforce traffic and criminal laws, prepare reports, and maintain effective working relationships with residents, businesses, courts, and partner agencies. Essential Functions Law Enforcement Duties Patrol assigned areas by vehicle or foot to deter crime and maintain public safety. Respond to calls for service, emergencies, disturbances, accidents, and criminal incidents. Enforce applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Conduct traffic enforcement and investigate motor vehicle crashes. Make arrests in accordance with constitutional and departmental procedures. Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations. Secure and process crime scenes and preserve evidence. Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects. Execute warrants and assist in criminal apprehensions as authorized. Community Engagement Foster positive relationships with residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations. Participate in community policing initiatives and public outreach efforts. Provide information and assistance to the public in a professional manner. Emergency Response Respond to critical incidents, domestic disputes, mental health crises, and hazardous situations. Render first aid, CPR, and emergency assistance as needed. Coordinate with fire, EMS, mutual aid agencies, and regional law enforcement partners during emergencies. Reporting and Documentation Prepare accurate reports, citations, affidavits, and related documentation. Maintain records related to arrests, investigations, and evidence. Testify in court proceedings as required. Operate department technology, communications equipment, and body-worn camera systems in accordance with policy. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. OPOTA certification required or ability to obtain certification prior to appointment. Valid Ohio driver's license with acceptable driving record.
Ability to successfully complete:
Background investigation Drug screening Psychological evaluation Medical examination Physical fitness assessment Associate's or bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of criminal law, police procedures, and investigative practices. Ability to exercise sound judgment in stressful or rapidly evolving situations. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to de-escalate conflicts and interact professionally with diverse populations. Ability to safely operate police vehicles, firearms, and related equipment. Work Environment Police Officers may work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs. Duties may involve exposure to hazardous conditions, inclement weather, violent encounters, and emotionally stressful situations. Officers must maintain physical fitness standards necessary to perform essential law enforcement duties.
