Job Description

Company Overview Steel Center is an innovative Career and Technical School owned and operated by eleven southern Allegheny County school districts and located just south of Pittsburgh in Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania. We are a student-focused public school that delivers high quality Career & Technical Education to approximately 1,000 high school students, and are looking for a caring, highly motivated, and results-oriented professional for the following position: School Police Officer Position Summary The School Police Officer (SPO) serves as a law enforcement officer employed by Steel Center for Career and Technical Education pursuant to Article XIII-C of the Pennsylvania Public School Code and applicable provisions of Act 44. The School Police Officer is appointed by the Court of Common Pleas and is authorized to exercise the same powers as municipal police officers within the municipality where Steel Center is located. The SPO is responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and orderly educational environment while supporting the educational mission of the school. Statutory Authority The position is established pursuant to 24 P.S. §§13-1301-C through 13-1313-C, Act 44 of 2018, and subsequent amendments to Pennsylvania school safety legislation. Candidates must satisfy all MPOETC training, certification, and continuing education requirements applicable to School Police Officers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Provide police services to protect students, staff, visitors, and school property. Patrol school buildings, grounds, parking areas, and adjacent property. Enforce applicable criminal laws, traffic laws, Board policies, and administrative regulations. Investigate criminal activity, threats, disturbances, and violations of law. Collaborate with local law enforcement, emergency responders, juvenile probation, and community agencies. Assist administration in addressing violence prevention, bullying, threats, vaping, substance abuse, and other safety concerns. Serve as a resource to students, parents, faculty, and staff regarding safety, crime prevention, and community resources. Participate as a member of the school safety and crisis response team. Assist with planning, implementation, and evaluation of emergency drills and preparedness activities. Monitor surveillance systems, alarm systems, and electronic access control systems. Conduct facility security inspections and risk assessments and recommend improvements. Respond to emergencies and provide first aid or coordinate emergency medical response. Assist with Safe2Say Something reporting procedures and threat assessment activities. Prepare reports, maintain records, and document incidents and investigations. Testify in court proceedings and administrative hearings as required. Coordinate with participating school districts regarding student safety concerns and law enforcement matters. Supervise, coordinate, and provide direction to contracted security personnel to ensure compliance with Steel Center safety procedures and expectations. Assist administration in evaluating the effectiveness of contracted security services. Attend meetings, training programs, and professional development activities related to school safety. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or designee.
Qualifications Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of Pennsylvania laws governing School Police Officers. Knowledge of school safety, emergency management, and crime prevention practices. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with students, families, staff, and law enforcement partners. Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.
Required Certifications:
Current MPOETC (Act 120) certification or graduation from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy with separation in good standing. Eligibility for appointment as a School Police Officer under Pennsylvania law. Valid Pennsylvania driver's license. Current firearm qualification and ability to maintain annual qualification requirements. Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification or ability to obtain. Act 34, Act 151, and Act 114 clearances.
Preferred Qualifications:
Five years of law enforcement experience. School Police Officer, School Resource Officer, or community policing experience. NASRO Basic School Resource Officer Training or ability to obtain within twelve months. Knowledge of Safe2Say, threat assessment procedures, and school emergency operations planning. Terms of Employment Full-time, ten-month position. Salary, benefits, work schedule, evaluation, and other conditions of employment shall be established by the Steel Center Joint Operating Committee and applicable policies.
Pay:
$52,000.00 - $58,000.00 per year
